“He’s coming, baby, but I need to make sure you don’t have any broken bones. Did he hurt you anywhere besides your face?” Doc asked.

She knew Doc. She trusted him. He had been a medic in the military and was the club’s honorary doctor, but the only person she wanted was her Daddy. Her entire body shook, and it felt as though each breath burned her lungs more and more.

“Remi, I need you to slow your breathing. You’re going to have a panic attack and start hyperventilating. Take a slow breath in. Thatta girl.”

Doc’s deep voice was smooth like velvet, and it calmed her, making it easier to listen to his instructions to breathe slower.

“Good girl. There you go. Good. Can you open your eyes for me? Bear has a surprise for you.”

Slowly, she opened her eyes to find both Doc and Bear hovering closely. Bear held out a stuffed bear to her and as soon as she clutched it to her chest, she knew everything was going to be okay. Nuzzling her face into the soft fur, she took another deep breath.

“That’s such a good girl. Look, here comes your Daddy,” Doc crooned.

She looked up to find Kade striding toward her looking absolutely terrified.

“Is she okay? We need to get her to a hospital,” he said as he walked up.

It felt as though everyone was moving around her but she couldn’t focus on any one thing and everything seemed blurry. Just as Kade reached her, everything started to fade to black as she went limp in his arms.

“Why is she not awake yet?”

“She’ll wake up soon. They gave her pain medication, so she’s only sleeping. She’ll be drowsy for the next several days while she’s taking it.”

Huh. She knew those voices. Her Daddy and Doc. Why were they talking to each other like she wasn’t even there? She was there, but she couldn’t see them. Why couldn’t she see them? Were her eyes closed? Since she couldn’t feel them, she really didn’t know. Actually, she couldn’t feel anything. Everything felt numb and floaty and kind of funny. What was so funny, though?

“Has the sheriff contacted you to tell you what’s happening with Caspian?”

Huh. She knew that voice too. It was Steele’s. How many people were there?

“He said to let him know when she’s awake and he could come by to ask her some questions for his report, but for now, they’re holding him in a cell until they transfer him to a state penitentiary. The sheriff did disclose that Caspian was trying to get revenge for being kicked out of the MC. He knew Remi was a big part of the MC family and I guess he knew I had feelings for her so she was the best target to hurt us,” Kade replied.

Caspian. She remembered him. He’d been a prospect for the MC but had been kicked out. Why were they talking about him?

Fuzzy memories flooded her mind. Back alley. Black truck with red paint. Kicking and hitting him as he drove wildly down the highway. The thought of her kicking him so hard he’d screamed made her giggle. He’d deserved it. He’d hit her first.

“She’s giggling. Is she dreaming?” Kade asked.

Trying to shake her head, she winced as the pain of moving set in. “Ouchie.”

Her throat felt dry and scratchy, and she kind of sounded like a frog when she spoke, which made her giggle again. Everything was so funny.

“Why is she laughing?” Kade demanded.

Doc chuckled. “Because she’s high as a kite on pain medication.”

“Princess, can you hear me? Daddy’s right here.”

She could feel him near her, and when she tried to lift her hand to touch him, she was stopped short by some sort of tension pulling her hand the other way.

“Stop moving your hand, baby. You have an IV connected. I’m right here,” Kade crooned as his warm hand covered hers.

Letting out a sigh, she relaxed against the bed and faded to sleep again.

It was nighttime when her eyes fluttered open. The lights in the room were dim, and there were big windows off to the side that overlooked part of the city. All the lights down below were pretty. There was a slow beeping noise coming from behind her that was getting on her nerves.
