Why was she in a hospital room? And why did she feel so itchy? Looking around as much as she could without moving her throbbing head, her eyes landed on a figure beside her with his head resting on her bed at her knees. A smile pulled at her lips.

“Daddy,” she murmured and then started coughing. Her throat was still dry and sandpapery.

Kade immediately sat up and stared at her as if he couldn’t believe it was actually her before he rose from his chair and moved up near her head.

“Baby. Oh, God, I’m so sorry,” he said, his voice choked up.

Why was he sorry? He saved her. He protected her. She was the one who messed up and walked out into the alley. How stupid was she?

When she tried to speak, she started coughing again. He quickly reached over to a table and grabbed a cup with a straw and held it up to her mouth. It was the best water she’d ever had in her life. Cold and soothing on her throat.

“I’m sorry I messed up, Daddy.”

His eyes widened and he shook his head. “What? You didn’t mess up at all. I fucked up. I didn’t keep you safe.”

“I went out into the alley by myself.”

“Because you thought the person who was stalking you was apprehended already. It’s not your fault, baby. Fuck, I should have had people at the front and the back of the bar. I should have done more.”

She started giggling and he looked at her in confusion.

“Why are you laughing, Little girl?”

Reaching out for him, she tugged on the bottom of his cut. “Because we’re both blaming ourselves, and it wasn’t either of our faults.”

He thought about it for a minute before he nodded. “You’re right. It’s Caspian’s fault. But I’m still so upset with myself that I didn’t do more to protect you. I feel like I let you down.”

Was he crazy? He must have really lost it.

“You didn’t let me down. You saved me. You and Steele and the rest of the guys.”

Nodding, he leaned down and kissed her forehead. “I’m so glad you’re okay. They didn’t find anything broken but they did find a lot of bruises and they put you on some pain medication to help with that. Your foot is sprained too.”

She grinned. “It was worth it.”

He tilted his head and narrowed his eyes. “What was worth it?”

“Kicking the shit out of him as he was driving. The idiot didn’t even restrain me other than the child lock on the door and locking the window so I couldn’t roll it down. What kind of kidnapper is he? A terrible one, that’s what kind.”

Suddenly, Kade burst out laughing as he shook his head at the same time. “Oh, my princess. You’re so damn amazing. I’m so proud of you for fighting back. So damn proud.”

“What happened with Bill?”

Kade shrugged. “Steele called him and apologized for our guys roughing him up and explained the situation. Bill understood and said he didn’t have any hard feelings and he was glad we found who was actually stalking you. Bill is a strange guy but after Steele talked to him, we’re pretty sure he’s harmless.”

Oh. Well, that was a good thing. The older man was a bit strange but Remi had never felt any weird feelings from him. He just seemed sad and lonely.

Her eyes felt heavy again. “I love you, Daddy. I’m gonna sleep again.”

“Okay, Princess. You sleep. I love you too, and I’ll be right here when you wake up.”

TWENTY-FIVE

KADE

Waiting for her to wake up again was torture. All he wanted to do was pull her into his arms, take her home, and never let her go again. He was pretty sure his heart would never recover from what had happened, so it wasn’t worth taking the risk of letting her out of his sight again.

Doc knocked on the door shortly after the sun came up, and Kade almost hugged the man as he walked in with two cups of coffee in hand. He needed all the caffeine he could get. When she woke up, he wanted to be awake and alert.
