“Are you serious?” he asked, and when I nodded, he kissed me.

“I wanted to celebrate, and I was worried it would be harder to plan at your place,” I murmured against his mouth.

“I can’t believe you did all of this for me.”

I’d been adamant that I wouldn’t be able to take any vacations. I wanted to fill as many rooms as possible. But it had been six months, and things were steady going into the fall.

I was in close contact with Juliana, and I discussed my ideas with her. She was the one who encouraged me to hire more help and take more time off. The key was hiring people that you trusted, and Miranda and Waylon had offered to manage the B&B so we could go on vacations.

Sam pressed play on the playlist on the sound system he’d installed outside, and couples started pairing off around us to dance. Mac’s arms came around me as we swayed to the music.

I felt content as I looked up at him. “I hired a manager.”

“You’re kidding,” he said, looking down at me. Despite the guests dancing around us, Mac only had eyes for me.

“She’s moving into the owner’s suite in two weeks. The bad part is, I don’t have much time to find a new place.” Then I waited to see what he’d say. I wanted him to invite us to stay with him, but I wasn’t sure he was ready.

“I want us to be a family.”

I closed my eyes. “I want that too.”

“I’d love it if you moved in with me, but if you want to live on your own for a while, I’ll understand.”

I opened my eyes as they filled with tears. “We’d love that. I already asked Delaney, and she wants to live with you and Rocky.”

Mac’s lips twitched. “She wants to live with me, or is it just Rocky?”

“I promise it’s both,” I said as I kissed him softly.

“You moving in is the best present I could have asked for.”

“There’s more. But I’m not giving you your present until later.” I had plans of going back to his house and seducing him after I revealed his real present.

“Can I see it now?”

I shook my head. “You’ll spoil my plans.”

Mac frowned. “I don’t think I like surprises anymore.”

“Who knew you were a big kid on your birthday?” I teased.

“That’s me. A kid who’s ecstatic he got exactly what he wanted this year: the woman of his dreams and a beautiful daughter.”

I loved when he called Delaney his daughter.

Carter visited from time to time, always unannounced, expecting us to drop everything to see him. We never changed our plans and made sure to talk to Delaney about her feelings and be sensitive to what she wanted. We hadn’t bothered to change any of the details in our original agreement because Carter hadn’t asked for more time. At this point, she was starting to see Mac as a father figure.

Carter was back and forth with the girlfriend, moving from South Carolina to Texas and back again. I didn’t get too entrenched in his life. I knew enough so I could protect Delaney.

“How do you feel about expanding your family?” I asked softly. I hadn’t anticipated bringing this up at the party, but it just felt right.

He stilled, his expression surprised. “Are you—”

I nodded, pleased he’d guessed it.

His hand found mine, and he led the way to my apartment. Once we were inside, he asked, “You’re pregnant?”

“Yes,” I said.
