The concern in her tone made him smile.

“I’m doing good. How about you?” His eyes roamed over her, observing every part he could see. “Are you in any pain?”

“My neck is a little bruised, arm a little scraped up, but I’m fine.”

He hated being incapacitated. He wanted to get up and inspect her for himself.

Caleb touched the bandages over his stomach. “I’m mad that I didn’t do as much damage to him as I wanted to. The motherfucker screwed me over in business, hurt you, then cut me because I wouldn’t let him keep doing it.”

Tiera glanced at the rising number on his blood pressure monitor. “Don’t let thinking about him upset you. He’s going to get what’s coming to him in prison.”

That wasn’t good enough for Caleb, but he let it go. “Thanks for the flowers,” he said, eying the bouquet. “It was thoughtful of you.”

“I thought you could use something to brighten up the room. Plus, they smell so good.” She leaned down and sniffed one of the petals. “Refreshing.”

To him, she smelled better than lilacs. “You brighten my room. Thanks for coming to visit me,” he replied, wishing he could stand and embrace her the way he wanted. “How is everything at the office today?"

She blushed. “Everything is flowing, but I don’t want you to worry about anything but feeling better.”

“Well, with me and Vivian down and Terrance out of town, I can’t help but wonder how things are going.”

She tilted her head. “First of all, I’m here, so things are going just fine.”

“You’re right.” She could handle anything that arose at Fitzgerald and Wright. She could damn near run the company without any of their help. He appreciated everything she had done since she came back to work for them.

“Second of all, Terrance is back. He got back this evening.”

He looked defeated. “Damn, we needed that deal he was working on.”

“He probably wants to tell you himself, but he sped things along after hearing what happened here. The deal is closed.”

Careful not to put pressure on his stomach, he pumped his fist. “Way to fucking go, Terrance. He’s always crushing it.”

“You know he’s a go-getter,” Tiera agreed.

“I shouldn’t have ever doubted that he would close the deal.”

“Right. And I’ve published a press release doubling down on the media already circulating about Stuart’s misconduct. The release explained how he was behind the photos taken out of context. So, your image has been cleaned up. Everything can go back to how it was before Stuart started this drama.”

He reached a hand out to her. “Not everything.”

She allowed her hand to go into his. “He tried to make you out as the bad guy. Now everyone knows who’s the real asshole,” Tiera said.

“As long as you know who I am, I don’t care what anyone else thinks. You are the only person that matters in my life right now.”

Her brow furrowed. “Why are you getting sentimental on me?”

“Because I don’t want everything to return to the way it was. There’s something. Possibly the most important thing that I want to change.”

She smiled. “What could that possibly be?”

“Us.”

“You want there to be an us. Are you sure you aren’t drowsy from hospital medication? I don’t want any excuses tomorrow.”

She was joking, but Caleb wanted there to be no misinterpretation of what he was saying to her.

“I’m so serious, Tiera. You don’t know how glad I am that you’re back from traveling from Alaska to Hawaii to California. I want you to stay here. With me.”
