“Sì, le sue donne dai capelli scuri erano belle, ma tu sei speciale.” She gestures animatedly toward the living area. “Che liberazione!”

Sandro raises his eyes from his phone in warning.

Mama Biello clucks at him, not the least bit intimidated. She adores him, doesn’t she? Like a nana adores her grandson. And Sandro eats it up.

I blink, once more in tune with the softer, caring side of him.

Be careful, Riley. Don’t overlook the bad for the good.

“Hai del succo di pomodoro fresco per il nostro piccolo ubriacone?” Sandro nods in my direction.

Mama Biello wiggles a crooked finger at me. “Limoncello no good, Riley,” she scolds before hurrying away to do his bidding.

“What did you say to her?”

“That little drunks deserve to be spanked.”

“You didn’t.” My cheeks warm, and his eyes darken.

But his cell phone buzzes, drawing his attention. “Damn it.”

“Bad news?”

“That remains to be seen. Be right back.”

I watch as he stalks off.

Mama Biello returns to set two tomato juices and two gorgeous omelets on the island. My stomach growls at the sight. I take a few bites, and immediately feel better.

But the older woman is talkative this morning. “Sandro sente qualcosa di forte per te,” she says with a grin.

“Sorry. I don’t understand.”

Patting her hand over her heart, she repeats the same words. “Sandro sente qualcosa di forte per te.”

I swallow hard. “Di forte per te?”

She nods vigorously. “Sente qualcosa di forte per te.”

My pulse pounds wildly, and I’m suddenly feeling more lightheaded. “I don’t understand.” Do I?

She sighs, then looks past me.

“What were you two talking about?”

Mama Biello laughs and scurries off, leaving me to explain the odd exchange. Sandro slides onto the stool and takes a mouthful of omelet.

“You always believe everyone’s plotting against you?”

He chews his food before responding. “Most people are.”

“I never have.”

“I know that.”

My eyes go wide. “But you kidnapped me.”

“You’d be dead if I hadn’t.”
