“I know. But don’t, I’ll be alright.”

Elliott left the loft apartment quicker than ever. She watched him from the window and his frame got smaller and smaller as the distance grew between them.

So my nerdy, sexy, ravishing best friend is also a bad boy. Not sure I saw that one coming…

WALKING AWAY

Deckard College

A private liberal arts college in Eastern Kentucky

“Dr. Elliott Jaiyn, Sr., welcome to Deckard College,” said the nice lady in the Human Resources Department, before handing Elliott a set of office keys and further paperwork. “Our computer science department is lucky to have you, sir.”

“Oh, please call me E.J. All my friends do.” Elliott threw on the charm and was thankful that distracting her with a bit of flirting let her quickly glance over his father’s driver’s license that he’d handed to her for verification.

It had taken very little effort to hack into the college's system and input his father’s information as a new hire in the computer science department. Elliott Jaiyn, Sr., was a retired professor of philosophy but had recently died, leaving his sudden absence an opportunity for his son to steal his identity.

Elliott might have felt bad had he and his father been on speaking terms when he passed away, but as it turned out, a quick stop by his mom’s place on his way out of town proved to be fruitful when he snatched his father’s wallet from his chest of drawers when she wasn’t paying attention. Still had cash in it too. And the piece he needed most, his social security card.

“You probably need a copy of my social security card too. How silly of me,” he said, handing it over, stacking it on top of the license to cover up that info again. He had smudged the age on the card to match his real age and the age he had put in their system. There was no way he’d pass for a man 25 years his senior, but thankfully his father had aged gracefully and the picture would suffice if not given too much attention.

“When you get your local address, please let us know so we don’t accidentally send any mail to your old address,” she said. Elliott just assumed he’d hack in and update that himself when the time came, but it would make sense to follow protocol. He was going to have to figure out a new bank account too before his first check was directly deposited into his mother’s account and she alerted the bank of the mistake. He knew she would never tell his secret, but he couldn’t stand the thought of involving her in his mess.

“That's all?” he asked after all the copies were made and forms were filed.

“That’s all! You’re officially hired!”

He breathed a sigh of relief and left campus to look for an apartment.

Elliott’s story continues…on the run, hiding out, waiting to see how the dust will settle. Find out more in the release of his full-length novel, coming soon! Be the first to know when it’s available by signing up for Tiffany’s newsletter at www.tiffanycarby.com.
