Pressing my lips together, I tried to contain my laughter, failing miserably as it roared up my throat, tumbling out of my mouth unceremoniously. The ridiculousness of what he was saying fueled my giggles.
I sobered. “You’re being serious?”
“Of course I’m being serious.”
“No one can absorb the power of The Stygian. This is absolutely preposterous, not to mention suicidal.”
His chuckle was deep, running over my skin like velvet. I thanked the Goddess he couldn’t see the quake his voice caused inside me. “I guess you’ll have to stick around and see.”
“Stick around? Are you nuts?”
He frowned, staring at me as if I had snakes dancing in my hair.
I continued, “The only way I’ll stick around is if you keep me here, which you won’t be able to do for much longer, because I promise you, I will escape, and when I do, you—”
All my laughter fled in a rush the moment Reaver grabbed me by the neck and crashed his mouth to mine. His lips were pillowy-soft and full, and I wanted so much to melt and give in because it was the best kiss of my life, which was pathetic. Logical thought kicked in when I felt his wet hot tongue glide over my lips, trying to get me to open for him.
Fuck that. Planting both hands on his chest, I pushed him away, though I felt the chill brought on by our disconnection.
“What the fuck is wrong with you?”
“I had to shut you up somehow.”
“Listen, asshole, I will never want you, so don’t ever do—”
He came at me again, this time squeezing my neck harder while his other hand fisted in my hair. I tried to keep my lips shut tight, but it was no use. This man undid me like no other. I moaned, melting into his body, my hands clinging to the lapels of his jacket. And my mouth? It let him in like he was the oxygen I needed to breathe. As if I’d die if I didn’t bend to his desires.
His kiss turned rough and demanding, lighting me on fire. He let go of my hair, only to squeeze my ass. He growled into my mouth, and I almost came.
I was ready for him to do everything and more. But he broke the kiss, leaving me swaying and struggling to regain my composure. “You want me.”
“Fuck off.”
He grinned, squeezing my neck a little more. “You better behave or you’ll face the consequences.”
And with that, he left the room, leaving me seething once again.
The female who came to groom me was older, serious, and most likely mute, as she didn’t speak a word the whole time she did my hair, nails, and makeup. No one had ever pampered me this much, and yet, I couldn’t enjoy it, as what had happened with Reaver kept playing on a loop in my head. The fear, the shock of him cleaning me and dressing me. The arousal this had caused. And that kiss.
Best kiss of my life. Too bad it was followed by the rekindled hatred his parting words set off.
“You better behave or else you’ll face the consequences.”
Fuck him. I would do the opposite of behave.
CHAPTER EIGHT
Reetah
A shiver ran down my spine as I followed him down the long corridor. Large stained-glass windows on either side caused a prism of colors to fall on my skin. It should have warmed me. It should have made me feel better. But it didn’t.
My skin broke out into goosebumps as I fidgeted with the ruffles of my skirt—which I could no longer enjoy or feel sexy wearing, seeing as how I was about to meet the big bad wolf.
Not to mention I was angry Reaver had made me wear something that made me feel so good, knowing the fate that awaited me.
Petrified, I slowed my steps. I couldn’t deny it as we approached a large black door that seemed made of marble. What was on the other side? I couldn’t picture it. All I knew was that Murmur was waiting and he’d do unspeakable things. He’d most likely violate me or order his minions to do it for him.
I wasn’t sure they’d kill me, although I wouldn’t put it past them. But there are worse things than death. I thought about Emmie, wondered if they’d already done these things to her. My thoughts flitted to what he’d said about her, words which had unwillingly resonated with me.
