“What makes you think you have free will? The moment Reaver took you, you ceased to be anything but my captive. So, if I tell you to bend over and get fucked, that is exactly what you will do. You can’t refuse, and even if you could, I would not recommend it, as the first person who will pay for your resistance will be your cowardly princess, Emmaline.

He waved a hand dismissively. “You may leave, Reaver, and take her back to her cell. Perhaps she needs to be groomed some more. Get someone to teach her manners. And then you can throw her to the wolves.”

CHAPTER NINE

Reaver

“You know what to do?” Murmur said to the group of guards standing in front of him as I made my way into his office. I took a sip of whiskey from the tumbler in my hand, my other hand in the pocket of my slacks as the group of males all nodded their compliance.

“What to do with what?” I asked, making my way to his couch and sitting, setting an ankle over a knee.

“Train the mortal wench.”

“With all due respect, Uncle, but are you sure? Wouldn’t the princess be worth more with her virtue intact?”

“I’m referring to her nuisance of a lady’s maid.”

At this, my body stiffened, and I returned my foot to the floor, scooting closer to the edge of the couch. “What do you plan to do with her?”

“Have the boys here fuck her into oblivion, so she may learn how to please our clients.” He turned to look at the men gathered in the room, their tongues almost wagging, no doubt imagining all the ways they would fuck her.

My fists tightened of their own accord, and I struggled to find the will not to rip said tongues out of their mouths and shove them down their throats.

“Is that really necessary?”

Uncle aimed his sharp eyes in my direction. “Is something the matter, nephew?”

“The girl is a weak mortal, hardly in need of extreme tactics to tame her into obedience.” I tamped down a grimace as my words sounded false to my own ears. I didn’t know what Reetah was, but mortal she was not. Of this, I was sure. I could feel it, and if I did, so did my uncle.

“You know better than anyone the girl is no mere mortal. What better way to trigger whatever abilities she may possess than by subjecting her to a bit of torture? It will scare her powers into manifesting themselves, and once we know what she’s capable of, we can decide which role to give her in my brothel and in my army.”

“Subjecting her to a bit of torture.”

The statement sat on my chest with an all too foreign heaviness.

My jaw clenched as I did my best to maintain an air of impassivity, but my uncle had known me my whole life. There was no fooling him.

Murmur arched a powerful brow. “Is there something you’re not telling me, Reaver?”

“I will take her for myself.” The words flew out before I could even grasp what they were, and the significance of my statement. I didn’t ask him to give her to me. I simply informed him of my decision, disregarding his status as the King of Hell and future King of Anathema.

“You have been a faithful soldier, serving under my command for over a hundred years. For that, I will grant your request and pardon your insolence, but let me be clear when I say that not even my son has a right to speak to me as if it is he who holds the power. Let this be the first and only time you treat me as your subject, instead of the other way around.”

“Yes, Your Highness.” I turned on my heel and walked to the door.

“Reaver.”

“Yes?”

“Love isn’t something I allow here. I don’t know your reasons for wanting this girl for yourself, but it better not be love, and I expect to see evidence of her taming.”

CHAPTER TEN

Reetah

Knees wobbling, I stood in the luxurious bedroom where Reaver had left me, still dressed to the nines, and with no word as to what came for me next.

“And then, you can throw her to the wolves.”
