Well, he had me there, but there was no way I’d confirm his suspicions. “I won’t have sex with you.”

He got closer, crowding me against the window. “You will.”

“You’re delusional.”

“You will because of how fast your heart beats when I walk into the room.”

“That’s because you scare me!”

He smiled, sweeping a lock of hair off my face. “You will, because of the way you smell like pure wanton desire every time we’re around each other. And don’t deny it. Remember, I’m a powerful demon.”

Shit, fuck, crap! “I refuse to sleep with you.”

“It’s not that easy.”

“What do you mean? No means no, asshole.”

“We don’t ascribe to those moral lines here. You’re in a new world and it’s imperative for you to learn how to navigate it or you won’t live much longer. This is not a life of gardens and healing elixirs. This is the lion’s den and you are but a lamb.”

“I. Will. Not. Have. Sex. With. You.”

“If I don’t fuck you, then someone else will. In fact several someones, and they won’t do it here in a nice place. They’ll take you to the dungeon where they’ll gang-rape you and beat you to a pulp until you are completely broken. Body and spirit.”

“You’re lying.”

“Why would I lie? I walked into the king’s office and heard him tell the other guys to take you to the dungeon and have their way with you. I’m saving you here.”

“Then tell him we did it and that’s it.”

“He will check.”

“Check what? The fuck is wrong with you people?”

“I’m already breaking the rules as it is, bringing you to my chambers when every other prisoner is trained and untamed in the dungeon.”

“Why did you bring me up here?”

He hesitated for a moment. “Because I’m curious to know what you are.”

“This again? I’m just a mortal.”

“You don’t smell like a mortal. You don’t look like a mortal.”

“Of course I look like a mortal.”

“You have no idea, do you?”

“No idea of what?

But he didn’t answer. He just looked away, undoing his cufflinks and rolling up his sleeves as he walked away to a bar where he poured himself a drink. My body stiffened as he came back, his hair shifting around his chiseled face and broad shoulders, his green eyes holding me hostage—pun intended.

When he was but a few inches away, he stopped. I looked up into his face, keeping my spine erect and my chin held high because I refused to let him in on just how nervous he made me.

“Don’t worry, I won’t hurt you in a bad way.”

“Hurting someone is always bad.”

“Not when it comes with enough pleasure to make you forget everything else.”
