“It was good.” She draws fingers across my cheek. “You're a wonderful lover.” Her smile stretches to a yawn.

“Katya?”

“Hmmm?”

“Was this a one-off? A one-night stand?”

She jolts, jerking back to look me in the face, her voice sharp. “Is that what you wanted?”

“No!” Then, more calmly, “No. I’ll admit, I’m… hoping for more.”

She relaxes, curving close to me again. “So, we’ll have it.” She yawns again. “Oh God, I'm suddenly knocked out. Hickman, you’ll have to excuse me. I've got to sleep.

I stroke her hair. “You do that.”

She droops down, a palm resting over my belly. Within moments, her breathing changes, albeit wheezing a little where her nose presses to my chest. It’s not the most dignified sound.

Grinning into the dark, I couldn’t give a damn.

Sleep won’t come. I lie back, staring up at the ceiling, Katya snuggled into the crook of one arm, the other pillowing my head as I gaze into eternity.

My mind spins: a riot of conflicting emotions.

The woman I love… have loved… for the last two years… has simply given herself to me.

It’s so unlikely, it’s laughable.

And yet the hand of cards fate has dealt me is mixed and deadly.

We have to go, both of us.

What to do?

Where to go?

I can buy us a few days grace if I behave normally, return to whatever duty Romano has lined up for me next.

How long?

Long enough to get Katya a change of name?

And a passport?

That’s it. Get her out of the country and start again.

Where to go?

I’ve lived on the move. Even if I had somewhere to call home, it wouldn’t be safe.

On the plus side, at least all my resources are international and mobile. I’m by no means rich, but I am comfortable.

Time to think…

How much time do we have?

CHAPTER THIRTEEN

As darkness fades to the pre-dawn light, my world is safe and warm and scented of my new lover.
