Page 57 of Blood & Ruin

Probably. I didn’t know much about them. At the same time, there was so much blood. If it was, wouldn’t she have been drained?

Someone plopped down in front of me. I looked up, expecting it to be Lucy, but I nearly choked on my own food when I realized it wasn’t her. Instead, it was Captain Byron himself. There was a wince on his face, wrinkles on his brow, and his lips twisted into a frown.

But he was here.

“What?” I asked after a moment.

A heavy sigh poured out of him. “How are you faring?”

I looked around. Someone had to put him up to this, right? Then again, this was Captain Byron. I highly doubt anyone made him do something he didn’t want to do.

“What?” I asked again.

He closed his eyes. “Why must you make this more difficult than it has to be?” he asked.

“I don’t know whatthisis supposed to be.” I gestured between the two of us.

“I’m checking in on you,” he said flatly. “To see how you’re doing.”

A brow quirked without me controlling it. This had to be some kind of a joke.

“Why?” I asked.

“I don’t know.” He shook his head, his hands on the surface of the desk. “Look, you’ve experienced something…traumatic. And as your captain, it’s my duty –“

“Headmaster Grey made you come check on me, didn’t he?”

A pause. “And if he did?”

I started to stab my macaroni. “Well, you’ve done your duty. You can go now.”

He stood, paused, then slid back down. He narrowed his eyes in my direction, lacing his fingers together and resting them on the surface of the desk.

“What?” I repeated.

“I’m being serious.” I opened my mouth and he lifted a finger. “If you saywhatone more time –“

“I’m just weirded out,” I said. “I don’t think you’re very good at the whole being nice thing.”

He wrinkled his nose. “How were your classes today?”

This had to be a dream. I must have fallen asleep in one of my classes. I wished Lucy was here. I was positive she would have woken me up. As it was, I was still stuck in this non-reality because there was no way Captain Byron really cared one way or the other about how my classes went.

“Oh.” I smiled. “I get it. Is this…is this, like, a full moon thing? Are your hormones all weird right now?”

“Hormones?” he asked, leaning forward.

“Yeah. They’re these molecules in our body that make us feel or respond a certain way.” I frowned. “I think. I can’t remember. I wasn’t really a fan of science and biology.”

He looked away. “I know what hormones are,” he said. He pinched his nose. “But to answer your question, no, this has nothing to do with the full moon.”

I gave him a long look, taking a bite of my food so I could buy some time to think about what I wanted to ask him.

“So,” I said, “what does happen for you? During the full moon. I heard Master Grey disappears for a bit, but where does that leave the other wolves?”

“At sundown, we leave campus and convene in the woods,” he said. “Once the sun dips, we become…dangerous.”

“Dangerous?” There was slight regard in my tone. I wouldn’t be surprised if he was trying to scare me on purpose, but I still didn’t understand why he would do that.
