Knock knock knock.

I closed my eyes.

This had to be a dream.

There was too much death.

I forced myself to stand. Even though this room was larger than the one I had been given, even though the bed was much more comfortable, there were more knots in my body now than there had been before. I forced myself to stand, stretching as much as I could as I made my way to the door. I opened it a crack so the person on the other side wouldn’t assume I was offering up some sort of invitation. I wasn’t in the mood to deal with anyone right now.

“Foster.” The familiar growl of Captain Byron proved to be both grating on my frayed nerves and relief that he was someone I knew, someone I found I trusted, if only slightly.

My shoulders sagged forward and I opened the door further.

“You look like shit,” he said as he brushed past me, making his way inside without waiting for me to let him in.

“Yeah, well, I had a rough night,” I said to his back, shutting the door and leaning against it.

“So I’ve heard.” He glanced around the room. “You’ll be returning to the Earth dormitories immediately.”

“But –”

“I have a room you can use for now,” he said, still not looking at me. “You’ll stay there.”

I wasn’t sure how to respond to that, so I said nothing. I didn’t want to argue. I didn’t want to fight.

I made my way over to the bed, one foot in front of the other.

“I take it you heard about Lucy?” I asked as I lowered myself to the foot of the bed.

He grunted his response. I took that to mean yes.

“Well?” I asked. “That’s it? What are we going to do about it?”

“We?” He turned suddenly, jaw ticked. His silvery grey eyes were narrowed on me. I felt myself lean back completely out of my own control. “You’vegotten yourself into this mess, and now,Ihave to clean it up.”

“Me?” I jumped off the bed. No longer did I fear those heady eyes, that penetrating gaze. “It wasn’t like I wanted Lucy dead. She was my only –“

“Regardless of what you want, it happened.” He crossed the room in a flash, suddenly in front of me. He was so tall, I had to angle my head back so I could take in his face. “She’s dead. And somehow, she wound up inyourroom the day after your mother wound up dead too.”

I whipped my hand out, ready to strike him. He caught my wrist before I could make contact.

“There it is.” He leaned forward so there were only two or three inches between us. “That anger. Thatemotion. That’s what will be your downfall, girl. I would be careful. People are already speculating thatyoukilled Lucy. And with your emotional response, people will believe it.”

Before I could respond, Kazu grabbed my wrist in the same spot as last night and pulled me away from Rocky’s knowing smirk.

“What’s wrong, Kazu?” he called after us. “Can I not speak to an Elite team member?”

Kazu ignored him. “Don’t you have Literature right now?” he asked instead, though the question was anything but casual. In fact, there was a growl to it I didn’t understand.

“You know my schedule?” I asked, furrowing my brow. Because there was no way he cared enough to actually know my schedule.

“Why are you ignoring the point?” he asked.

“And what is the point?” I asked, crossing my arms over my chest. Annoyance flared through my chest at his constant interference. I wanted to push back, I wanted to get a reaction out of him in any way I could in hopes that he would do what he did best, which was ignore me.

“You’re making a stupid mistake,” he said.
