And even if he didn’t agree with much of what she did, even if he couldn’t stand her emotions and how she expressed them, even if he didn’t get her blind loyalty to someone who treated her like complete garbage, she was stillhisresponsibility, and he had every intention of fulfilling that obligation. He couldn’t let Rocky help her with something like this. Rocky didn’t know her and couldn’t appreciate the annoying nuances he had picked up over the years. Kazu was the one who planted the idea of finding someone to do this with; if anyone should help her with that…it was him.

He began to exit the dining room, nose still tilted up. He wanted to track her scent, neededto find her before it was too late.

There was this overwhelming sense of urgency to get to her, and he couldn’t seem to understand it because Embyrlyn was not someone he typically cared about. In fact, he went out of his waytostay away from her. And now…now here he was, doing everything he could to gettoher.

Fuck. Don’t let it be too late.

Were they already starting?

Was Rocky kissing her soft, supple lips? Was she responding to the way he held her waist, brushed his chest against her own? Was she scared? Was her heart beating so uncontrollably against her chest that Rocky could feel it without even touching her?

Fuck, where were they?

His feet took him up the staircase to the Fire pack section of the academy, down the hall. Her scent grew stronger each step he took. It led him to a second hallway, this one crossing the first, down until the very last door on the right. Judging by the increase in scent, he knew, without a doubt, she was behind that door.

He sniffed some more, dramatizing the action. Kazu rarely had to make himself such a spectacle, but this was different. He had to make sure Rocky wasn’t here, because if he was…

His fingers shook with the overwhelming desire to break down the door, to crush the wood in his hands. He clenched his teeth, trying to control himself. His body was acting on instinct, and he still didn’t understand, couldn’t comprehend why he felt this way, only that he did, and he needed to make sure —

Before he even knew what he was doing, he raised a fist and pounded on the door.

This wasn’t like him. He took the art of subtlety to a whole new level. He didn’t even look around to see if anyone else was watching him make a scene. He didn’t care. The only thing he cared about was getting to her as fast as he could because she washisand no one else was allowed —

The door creaked open and Embyrlyn stood in the doorway. The second she saw him, confusion flashed across her emerald green eyes, and she dropped her arm from the door.

“Kazu-sensei?” she asked. She glanced behind him before meeting his eyes once more. “Is everything okay?”

“Where’s Rocky?” He didn’t wait for an invitation. Instead, he pushed past her so he was fully immersed in her room, his sharp gaze looking everywhere for even the subtlest of clues Rocky had been here.

“What?” Even more confusion flashed on her face, sparked with irritation.

Kazu didn’t care. She could be as irritated as she wanted.

“Rocky,” he repeated. “Where is he?”

“What are you talking about?” she asked.

He stopped looking around her room and focused his gaze on her. “I heard you talking,” he said in a low voice. “At dinner. I know you have history right now, and yet, you’re not in history class. Why not?”

Kazu could scent her frustration. It mixed well with her nervousness.

“I don’t know —“

“Don’t play me for a fool,” he said, his voice low, just above a whisper.

Embyrlyn clenched her teeth together.

Good. He wanted her mad.

“You’rethe one who told me to figure this out,” she said. “You’re the one who said I needed to find someone to help me with this. Now you’re mad? I know you think Rocky isn’t good enough, but I don’t have any other options, and time is of the essence.”

“That’s not true,” he said quietly.

“I leave tomorrow,” she said as though it was obvious. “If that’s notof the essence, I don’t know what is.”

He glanced away, taking a breath. “No,” he said. “I mean, it’s not true you only have Rocky as an option.” A beat. “You have me.”
