This was her first time —her first time —and he knew he didn’t deserve it. He knew he shouldn’t get the privilege of teaching her pleasure. If he had been intelligent about the whole thing, he would have let Rocky handle it. Rocky was a good person, experienced, and despite his reputation, Kazu knew he would treat her the way she deserved to be treated. He would make sure her first time was perfect.

But the thought of Rocky touching her, of anyone touching her, caused his insides to prickle and his wolf to push against the inside of his skin, ready to devour them. He didn’t understand. These sorts of feelings always eluded him, even when he had a girl he was serious with, even when he considered a future with her. Never had he been so damn…possessive.

If he didn’t get a handle on this…

Actually, Kazu realized he did need to take care of something before he returned here later tonight. Before the two did their own sort of ritual under the full moon. He needed to deal with Rocky.

Rocky wasn’tdifficult to track down. He was still sparring with Raquel when Kazu decided to step in.

“Ah, Kazu.” Rocky wasn’t surprised to see him, but then again, Rocky was never surprised. “I was wondering when I would see you.”

Kazu said nothing but arched a brow. The two continued to circle each other like they were dance partners on a dance floor. Kazu knew Rocky well enough to know all he needed to in order to get Rocky to start attacking. Rocky was impatient. Kazu, on the other hand, had no problem waiting for as long as he needed in order to get his opponent not only to attack first but to reveal a weakness or two.

“I had a feeling you had caught sight of me and Pinkie in the dining hall,” he said. “I could scent your jealousy from across the room. I’m surprised no one else did.”

“Jealous?”

“Protective maybe, but you caring about someone enough to be protective is a stretch,” (Rocky said. “Let me guess — you’re here to tell me to stay away from her tonight?”

“I’m here to tell you that your services aren’t required,” Kazu said.

“Interesting.” Rocky stopped circling in order to run his chin with his palm. “Want to tell me what’s gotten into you, Kazu? This isn’t like you. You’re not one to fuck your students —“

Without warning, Kazu threw a punch and clocked Rocky in the head. It was so unexpected, Rocky didn’t even consider blocking it, didn’t realize there would be anything for him to block in the first place. He staggered back, reaching up to gingerly touch his cheek.

Kazu glanced down at his fingers, still curled into a fist. His eyes widened, as though he, himself, was surprised by his decision to act first.

Then again, Rocky had asked for it. He wasn’tfuckinga student. It was more complicated than that.

“Interesting,” he said again, finally locking eyes with him. “You never talk about her. You never said one word. I didn’t realize —“

“There’s nothing to realize,” Kazu said. He had a feeling he knew what Rocky was going to say and he didn’t want to hear it, didn’t want to be confronted about it. “She’s my student. I have a duty to her.”

“Duty before honor?” Rocky raised a brow.

Kazu shrugged. “Something like that,” he said.

Now that he had done his part, done what he came for, he glanced at Rocky. Though he said nothing, Kazu hoped he’d be able to read the warning look in his gaze. He had no idea why he felt compelled to warn Rocky about Embyrlyn at all because, gods, heshouldn’tcare — and he still maintained he didn’t — but he couldn’t stop himself from making sure Rocky knew his place when it came to her.

Rocky clenched his teeth together before dipping his chin, probably the only acknowledgment he’d get.

Kazu turned, shoving his hands in his pockets.

“Have a good night,” Rocky called after him, his voice much too smug for Kazu’s liking.

Then again, Kazu didn’t have time for this. He had somewhere he needed to be, and he had no intention of being late.

Freya

Ihad to skip in order to keep the long stride of Byron’s legs in order to keep up with him. The crinkle of the grocery bag was deafening.

Byron was silent. Not even when we descended the stairs, not even when we crossed to another hallway that led to another set of dorm rooms, and then back up the stairs until we reached the front of his door. He unlocked the door and all but stormed inside. I swallowed and waited. Was I supposed to go inside? Wait out here? I wished he would open his mouth and tell me what he wanted.

“Well, are you just going to stand there?” he called from somewhere inside of his room.

I all but glared and quickly stepped inside before shutting the door behind me. It was only then that I realized I wasn’t sure what the protocol was for being in Byron’s room alone without any supervision. Technically, we had come from Adrienne’s room, and there had been two Alphas and a human captain there. But now, we were in Byron’s room – where he slept – and we were most assuredly alone.

“Over here.”
