“What are you begging for, baby?” he asked, his voice deep and throaty.

“Don’t stop,” I begged. “Please.”

He growled and leaned over me, gripping my thighs. I was begging, pleading for him to fuck me. I was so close.

And then, I felt him put distance between us. I collapsed on the bed, the pleasure fleeing my body. I heard him put on his pants. I listened as he walked toward the door. I sobbed when he left without a word.

Leo said goodbye. And it was far worse than anything I could have ever imagined.

Chapter Nineteen

CHRISTINE

I let out a sigh while looking back at the car. We spent the day resting in silence, deciding it was safer to travel at night. I was ready to get out of this town and take time to process everything.

“I got this, boss,” Eva said as she thrust out her hand for a shake.

“You sure you don’t wanna join us at the beach house?” I asked in a hopeful tone while turning back to look at her.

“Ugh, no offense, but unless you’re planning on kicking those guys out, I’m gonna pass. The awkward tension is thick, girl. No way am I going to be near whatever you’ve got going on.” She twisted her face into an exaggerated grimace. “Plus, if my dad thinks I’m being good here, he just might let me in on his secrets. And Yasmin’s cool.”

“If you need anything, call us—me specifically—okay? Don’t forget.”

Eva rolled her eyes and smiled wryly. “Look, I’ve been handling myself since I was twelve, so no worries here. But sometimes everyone needs a lil help, right?”

I shoved her shoulder and we both shared a laugh. “That’s all I’m saying.”

“So, as your friend, let me give you a piece of advice.” Eva winked at me. I followed her gaze to the car, where Atticus, August, and Leo were waiting for me. What a dumpster fire. After everything that had gone down, I was not looking forward to a road trip with all of them. We all still had to stick together.

“Hit me with it.” I shrugged as Eva cocked an eyebrow at me.

“Dump them!” she laughed.

I rolled my eyes and groaned. “It’s too late for that now!” I held my stomach as I chuckled nervously. “But we can figure this out somehow.” I didn’t necessarily believe my own words, but I didn’t want to drag Eva into all of my problems. She’d been forced to grow up at a young age, but that didn’t mean I was going to contribute to that. I let out a puff of air. “It’s crazy, right? Everything?”

“Not really,” Eva said with a shrug. “What’s crazy is the fact that you didn’t remember to take your birth control while boning three dudes.”

“Nice,” I replied flatly. “Be safe. I’ll text you.”

She waved her fingers and walked through the parking lot, away from us. The moment she was out of view, it felt like a weight settled on my shoulders. The weight of my long night and the exhaustion I felt hit me full force. I was nursing a broken heart and still reeling from the fact that I was pregnant.

The car seats were like two worlds apart: August and Leo in the front, and me with Atticus in the back. Even though I was sitting right behind Leo, I felt distant. I wanted to reach out and touch his long golden hair with the tips of my fingers, but was afraid the gesture would be rebuffed. Leo glanced at me through the rearview mirror, almost as if he could read my mind. He said nothing, but his eyes asked, are you okay? Every muscle in my body tightened as I felt a rush of emotion crash over me. I had never been so torn, and I wasn’t sure what to say.

“How are you, Little Monster?” Atticus asked.

“I’m alright,” I replied faintly, not wanting to give away my inner turmoil. Leo started the car, and drove us out of the parking lot.

Maybe, when we got to the beach house, we could escape this emotional crisis. I had no idea what kind of relationship we’d have after all this was done. We could take down Lord Nathan and Theodore DuPont, but then what? Would Leo quit his job? Would he leave us behind? Or would he stay and force both of us to linger in this unfulfilled state indefinitely?

The air between us screamed of heartbreak as Atticus spoke louder than necessary for Leo to hear. “You were up all night crying. Maybe you should rest some more.” We all looked exhausted, like we hadn’t slept in days—but I knew it was the weight of the last few weeks weighing us down. So much had happened and it was tough to process. Leo didn’t say a word. He just stared ahead into the night, lost in his own thoughts.

“I rested all day. I just want to get to the safe house,” I replied.

“I need the royal therapist. He’d know what to do,” August sighed, watching the scenery pass by. But, his hope was quickly quashed by Leo’s sharp retort.

“I don’t need a therapist.”

“What you need is a kick to the dick,” Atticus sneered, pulling me close and caressing my hair.
