Drav hugged Molev, thumping his back twice before releasing him.

“We will protect what you have worked hard to obtain,” Drav said. “I swear it.”

Molev nodded and picked me up just as Brog appeared with Roni.

“Let’s get this show on the road,” she called as they cleared the wall. We were seconds behind them.

Three vehicles waited. An MRAP, a Stryker, and the fueler. Sid and Brandon took the Stryker, and Steve and Roland took the fueler, leaving me, Katie, and Roni for the MRAP. We had a small supply of food, water, and spears. The rustic weapons weren’t something I’d seen before.

“I’ll watch our tail,” Katie said as we got in.

“I’ll drive,” I said.

Roni settled in to navigate, and it felt like old times as I started the engine. I had that same sense of determination and anticipation tempered by the reality of what we were about to try.

“Well, this is different,” Roni said, looking out the window as the Stryker then fueler started out.

I glanced at the fey escorting us. They were spaced out evenly between the three vehicles with two in front, two behind us, and three on each side.

Katie snorted. “How is this different? He’s right on the other side of a door just like he’s been since I got here.”

Roni and I shared a glance.

“Sex is supposed to be an amazing stress reducer,” Roni said. “You should try it. I bet he’d be willing.”

“Sex creates problems,” Katie said. “It doesn’t fix them.”

“Says you,” Roni mumbled, moving in her seat. She growled and pressed her middle finger against her window. “Do you know what he did to me this morning? He ate me. But not all the way. Just enough to give us both a taste of how amazing it would be. Then he proceeded to tell me to behave and not take any unnecessary risks. If I do that, he’ll eat me all the way when we’re done.”

She removed her hand. “I want to punch him in the dick for making me blue ball like this.”

“I should have rode with Sid,” Katie said.

“You know the rules,” Roni said. “If I’m suffering, everybody suffers.”

I laughed. I shouldn’t have. It was the worst timing for finding my funny bone. But it was pretty funny.

Roni gave me a disbelieving look. “Are you laughing at my misery?”

“A little–but a little at mine too,” I said.

“What do you have to be miserable about?” Katie asked, sounding both sad and curious.

“Did I tell you that the researchers had a satellite phone with them? They’ve been using it to coordinate with the team we left behind. Only they aren’t using it to find a cure to save humanity as much as they’re using it to find a cure that will destroy the hounds, infected, and fey.”

Roni made a choked sound. “Hell, no. I haven’t even had a chance to dance on Brog’s maypole.”

Katie said something about Jesus under her breath.

“You really need to think of something other than sex,” she said loud enough for us to hear. “A hobby. Overeating. Something.”

The next hour continued with the same level of banter. Roni bemoaned her born-again virgin status. Katie complained about Ben’s constant attention. And I just drove and listened to it all while waiting for the first road block.

“Can we just acknowledge what we’re trying not to?” I asked.

“Where the fuck are all the infected? It wasn’t this quiet on the way there,” Roni said.

“Thank you,” I said.
