“Judge all you want,” she said. “At least, I’m not suffering alone this way.”

“I think you’re taking ‘misery loves company’ to a whole new level,” I said.

She smirked and nodded. “You two staying for dinner?”

“No,” Molev said before I could answer.

“We’re actually here to recruit you and give Brog a break. Wanna blow up something big?”

She paused what she was doing. “I was going to tell you he didn’t deserve a break, but you’ve intrigued me. What are we blowing up?”

Roni’s interest increased once she heard everything.

“Hell yes, I’m in. This place is way more boring than I was promised.”

I caught the glance Molev gave Brog.

“I will go, too,” Brog said.

Roni snorted. “I guess that’s your bad decision to make. I’m going to be carrying, and the source of my sexual frustration will be a running target. Your ass is pretty cute, but your face has been pissing me off. You’ve been warned.”

“No shooting fey, Roni,” Molev said, his words laced with serious warning.

“Hey, accidents happen to the best of us,” she said with a shrug. “Even you make mistakes. Remember how you said Brog would be perfect for me?”

“We’ll see you at the wall in the morning. Come early,” I said.

It was still darkwhen Molev and I left the house the next morning. I was well-rested physically, but not sure where I stood emotionally.

After returning home the night before, Molev hadn’t pounced on me like he usually did. He’d made me dinner, and we’d talked about the caves and what we both thought would happen the next day. We washed dishes together then snuggled and watched a movie. Something we’d never really done at Irwin. It was nice. Very domestic but in a good way.

And when we’d gone to bed, he’d just held me until I’d drifted off.

It had reminded me of why I’d let Molev in in the first place. With him, I felt safe. Completely, and totally safe.

I laced my fingers through his as we walked.

“What’s your gut telling you now?” I asked.

“To be wary,” he said. “Danger is everywhere.”

I believed him even though I didn’t see any evidence of it. I saw the lights shining from the extra tall wall and the stars twinkling in the night sky. Fey walked the neighborhood, dark sentinels, to protect against whatever might lurk beyond the walls. Everything felt serene and not even a little threatening. And that was the worst kind of dangerous environment. The kind where people let their guards down.

“Did you warn everyone?” I asked.

“Yes,” he said.

I spotted Drav and Mya near the wall. She was bundled up in a thick jacket even though it wasn’t as cold as it had been. It felt like spring was just around the corner.

“The fueler is full,” Drav said. “And the supplies are packed. The others are already waiting.”

Molev grunted in acknowledgment.

“Be careful out there,” Mya said after hugging me. “Make sure it doesn’t take three months for him to return this time.”

“I’ll do my best,” I said.
