“Because Molev doesn’t need fighters,” I said, understanding Sid’s thought process. “He just needs amiable people with the will to survive.”

Molev grunted. “I like this plan.”

“But what will the people we weed out first do with the rest of their time if they’re with us for two days?” Steve asked.

“We can assess if they have any useful skills,” I said.

“Based on the number of stitches Molev’s received, it wouldn’t hurt to have people who know how to sew,” Roni said.

“If we get a few people who make the cut from this first group, maybe we could ask Waurlyn for some kind of internship with whatever skill-groups we need,” Katie said. “It could be like a secondary test to ensure we’re getting people who are actually willing to pitch in.”

“Not a bad idea,” Sid said.

“We can talk to Waurlyn about that,” I said, “but I’m not sure what skills we need.”

We discussed it as a group as we sipped our beverages. Steve came up with the most useful ideas based on games he played in the past. We needed people who knew how to build such as carpenters and engineers. We needed people who knew how to farm and/or grow food. We needed mechanics. In a world with people dependent on today’s advancements, it made sense to have someone around to repair what broke. Above all, we needed problem solvers. Creative people who could think outside the box to come up with solutions.

“Do I look like Human Resource material to you?” Steve asked.

Roni snorted. “Do any of us look like elite soldiers ready to train the next generation? No. But we’re still going to give our best to see that through. Don’t be a baby about vetting people’s personalities either.”

Steve frowned into his empty beer.

“I didn’t say I wouldn’t do it. I just don’t think I’m the best person for the job.”

“There is no one better than the people here,” I said. “Some of our personality quirks are as diverse as they come. Roni loves provoking people and is blatantly open about her body and what she wants. Katie’s reserved but friendly to everyone and very smart. I distance myself from people and am thoughtful but a little blunt. Yet, we all get along. You’ve lived with us for weeks. You know what harmony and comradery look like. That’s what you’re looking for. People who can support one another.”

Molev’s hand settled on the back of my neck. That was all it took for my core to clench and reawaken the part of me that had finally settled down. One core clench set off an echo of post-orgasm twitches again.

His fingers moved against my skin as he spoke.

“Andie is right. My brothers and I need more good people like you. If you meet a person who you would not welcome into this house now, we will mark them as unsuitable.”

The others nodded, but I couldn’t move. I was too afraid of sending off more wrong signals to my brain.

The faint sound of our doorbell broke up our impromptu gathering, and I sighed in relief as Molev released me. I stayed right where I was and let everyone else file inside first. Roni lingered, watching me with a smirk.

When Roland asked if we were coming in, she waved him inside.

“Problem?” she asked when he closed the door.

“Just enjoying the sun,” I said.

“Bullshit. I heard you went back for sevenths on his passion pistol’s scream cream.” She took the chair beside me. “And I want the details.”

“He told you that?” I asked, fighting not to show my shock.

“Hey, no getting mad at him. He needs to talk to someone about this stuff. Would you rather have him going to Steve for girl advice?”

I slouched lower in the chair and winced.

“I’m not spilling anything until you tell me what you two talked about.”

“He said he went down on you until you pushed him away and offered to blow him instead. When he started talking numbers, it didn’t take a genius to figure out what happened. I told him he needed to pace himself. That your baby maker needed to acclimate to his stamina.”

“Acclimate?”

She grinned. “Gurl, I got the impression he would eat you out all day if you let him. You better set some boundaries, or you’ll find yourself sitting on his face instead of that chair next group meeting. Anyway, I told him to ease into it and take breaks. Now tell me…how big is he? Was it amazing?”
