I rubbed a hand over my face.

“You already know how big he is. You felt it, and you saw it. And has Molev ever been anything less than amazing?”

She gave a wistful sigh.

“I can’t wait until we get to meet his people.”

I snorted. “You’re just thinking about getting laid. What are you going to do when you have a possessive man trying to tell you what to do, Roni? Based on what I know of Molev, I don’t think his people are the love them and leave them type. Are you ready to settle down?”

She made a horrified face.

“Exactly,” I said. “So be careful what you wish for.”

The sliding door opened behind me.

“Waurlyn would like us to return to the hospital now,” Molev said.

The beer I’d enjoyed helped make walking a little easier as I cautiously stood and followed Molev to the vehicle parked out front.

Molev was quiet on the ride to the hospital, spending most of his time frowning slightly as he studied his hands. I didn’t ask what was wrong. We were on our way to watch someone die another potentially agonizing death. Which was precisely why I’d allowed Molev to distract us both so many times this morning.

Despite how tender I was, I didn’t regret it. But I would definitely follow Roni’s advice and set some boundaries before I opened that door again.

The driver stopped in front of the hospital doors and let us out. Molev matched his pace to my slower one as we made our way inside and met with Waurlyn.

“Thank you for sending for us,” Molev said.

“Of course. The injection won’t take long. They’re trying a very small amount this time. The doctor doesn’t anticipate seeing any reaction for the first twelve to twenty-four hours.”

“I understand. I still want to be present.”

“How long will the doctor wait before testing the infection on Michael?” I asked as we took the elevator down.

Waurlyn gave me a startled look. “We haven’t injected any of the trial participants with the infection yet.”

“But Sara…” I’d watched her vomit and saw the way her eyes changed. And how she’d bitten Molev. “I don’t understand.”

The doors opened, and we left the elevator.

“The infection is in Molev. His immunity to it is preventing the trial participants from fully turning. It’s also preventing them from coming back once they die.”

Molev was infected?

My stomach churned, and I started to feel a little lightheaded. How stupid was I? I’d just made out with a carrier of the infection.

“Are you all right?” Waurlyn asked when I stopped walking. “You look extremely pale.”

Molev picked me up and hugged me close to his chest. “Where is the doctor?”

Hadn’t Molev said that there were other fey and human couples already? If all the fey were immune and already sleeping with humans, I would be fine.

“I’m fine,” I said. “It’s fine. It’s just been a really long day.”

Both Waurlyn and Molev studied me for a long moment.

“You know yourself best,” Waurlyn said finally. “If you say you’re fine, then I believe you.”

When she started walking again, I patted Molev’s chest.
