“Show me,” Molev said.

I let him go off with Roland and continued checking in with everyone. The next shift change happened just before dark, and after that, we all settled in for a long night.

However, it passed quietly enough that I convinced Molev to rest for a few more hours with me just before dawn.

Roni woke us at first light.

“Everything’s been quiet,” she said. “I think we should go.”

Molev pressed a kiss to my temple, and I glanced at his wounds, which were mending but still there.

“If we wait for me to fully heal, the infected will regroup,” he said.

“Fine. Let’s put the dummy up like we’d planned. Are you both rested enough?” I asked.

“Yep,” Roni said as Molev nodded.

“Okay.”

I didn’t have Molev’s intuition for sensing trouble, but something was telling me that things wouldn’t stay as quiet as they were now once he left.

CHAPTERTHIRTEEN

The soundof the truck rumbling out of the gate drew the attention of a few infected hiding in the distant trees. Once the truck passed their location, they tumbled from their cover and ran after it.

“A few are staying in the trees,” Sid said on his belly next to me as he looked through his scope.

My gaze swept over the other roofs within the interior fence. Each one had a pair of lookouts, and we had extra people patrolling below, just like we’d done the day before while Molev rested. The only difference was the dummy. I’d wanted to save using the dummy for when Molev was gone.

“Stand up fake-Molev,” I said over the radio. The soldiers on roof 3 changed fake-Molev from squatting to standing.

“The infected are paying attention,” Sid said. “They retreated farther into the trees.”

“Good. We’ll reposition him on another roof in an hour,” I said to him. “Hopefully, it’ll be enough to keep them away.”

I stayed with Sid for a few more minutes before making rounds, focusing on the watching infected rather than wondering how Brandon, Roni, and Molev were doing. Time passed quickly that way. So quickly that I was surprised when I heard “Truck incoming” on the radio.

“Please tell me it’s ours,” I said back.

It took a few beats for the response. “It’s ours.”

A weight lifted off my shoulders.

“Remove fake Molev from the roof,” I said over the radio.

Then I scurried down the ladder and jogged to the interior gate where we already had extra soldiers waiting. The truck appeared before Molev did. It had totes strapped to it again, and my stomach rumbled, reminding me I’d forgotten to eat.

Molev cleared the fence out of nowhere and opened the gate for the truck.

Roni drove it through with a grin on her face.

“Things went well?” I asked.

“We have fuel and more food,” Molev said.

“Good. Go clean up. I have fresh clothes waiting for you in the bathroom. I’ll handle this.”

He jogged off, and I followed Roni as she drove the fueler around to the airstrip and parked it next to the other vehicles we’d gathered there.
