“I wasn’t sure you knew to do that,” I said with a smirk.

“Other parts always distracted me,” he said, switching to the opposite side.

He didn’t try to do anything more than dry me and kiss me. After, he lovingly dressed me before quickly drying and dressing himself.

Hand in hand, we left the showers.

The rest of the team was there, grinning like idiots. The doctor was there, too, looking far less amused.

“No dentures,” Roland said with a smirk.

The doctor’s concerned gaze swept over me. “Were you bitten?”

“Yes and no,” I said. “An infected tried biting me, but my pants saved me. He never broke through the material.”

“I’d like to look at it if you’re willing.”

“Sure.” I looked at Molev. “Go do what you need to do. I’ll find you when I’m done.”

He frowned slightly and grabbed the back of my head.

“Ooh, we’re going to get a show,” Roni said.

“You act like you haven’t been out here listening for the last hour,” Steve said.

“That was the teaser. This is the real deal,” she insisted. “Give her tongue, Molev.”

His frown deepened as he stared at me, and I patted his chest. “This is why privacy is important.”

He grunted and released me.

He stayed behind with the others while I left with the doctor. My gaze swept over the base, noting the guards and lookouts. We already had people on the roofs and on the vehicles in addition to a few patrolling the area on foot.

Satisfied the team had covered everything, I nodded to the guards at the entrance to the main bunkhouse and went inside. Several of the bunks were already occupied with sleeping personnel. I needed to get Molev in here to sleep soon, too, or he’d skip it entirely.

“Over here,” the doctor said softly. She gestured to an empty bunk that had her medic kit on top.

I sat down and pulled up my pant leg without her asking and rested my foot on the bed. She gently prodded the area above my ankle with a gloved hand.

“You’re very lucky,” she said softly when she finished her examination.

“I am,” I agreed. “If I were you, I’d ditch the scrubs and go with something heavier like denim or canvas. I’m proof that a little bit of resistance can be the difference between life and death.”

She continued to stare at my growing bruise even as I tugged my pant leg back into place.

CHAPTERFOURTEEN

Molev stood on the roof, looking out over the base, with Roni by his side. The way he had his arms crossed as she talked to him had me wondering what she was saying that was putting him in a bad mood. Or maybe it was a lingering bad mood from my close call. Although I’d done my best to help him let it go, I knew very well it would have taken hours in that shower to completely reassure him. Maybe not even then.

“Did you eat yet?” I asked softly from my place on the ground, still yards away.

He unfolded his arms, said something to Roni, and jumped down.

“Hey, handsome,” I said when he closed the distance between us. “Still angry at me?”

He cupped the back of my head and tenderly stroked my cheek.

“I was never angry at you, Andie. I am mad the fuel was taken and that we are not already home where you will be safe. I am mad your people did not listen to me sooner. I am mad—”
