I threaded my fingers through his hair and pulled him down for a kiss. It went from sweet to molten in a heartbeat, and I loved it. But I didn’t want him to think I was starting something else. It was way too soon for another round with him.

Loosening my hold on his hair, I started easing up on the passion. He took my cue and pulled back to look at me.

“We can’t change the past,” I said. “All we can do is work on the present and make the best choices we can for a better future.”

He grunted.

“Now, are you hungry, or do you have more you need to do?”

“I will eat with you.”

“Eat and rest,” I said. “You’re not getting enough sleep. Especially when you’re running for so long during the day.”

He let me lead him to the mess hall where the majority of our people were gathered. They’d already sorted through whatever food had been left behind and had a big pot of something on the stove.

“Roland mentioned that you’re a protein-based eater,” one of the women said to Molev. “We found some canned meat that we set aside for you.” She produced two large cans of corned beef hash. “Will these work? There’s more if you want them.”

“These will be fine,” I said. “Thanks for thinking of him.”

“Of course. Thank you for everything you’re doing to keep us safe.” When she said it, she wasn’t just talking to him but to me too.

I nodded, accepted a bowl of the stew they were simmering, and took a spot at a table with Molev. We ate a quick meal with their quiet conversation floating around us. Guards stood inside the door, watching everything, even in here.

“It won’t be like this once we reach my people,” Molev said, watching my gaze.

“Haven’t I proven that I trust you yet?” I asked.

The corners of his mouth tilted a little as he nodded and finished his meal. As soon as I was done, we left, and I led him to the bunks, where we lay down with the others.

“Keep those eyes closed until dusk,” I said, running my fingers over his eyelids.

He captured my hand and kissed the tips of my fingers.

“Sleep,” he said softly.

* * *

I was alonewhen I checked my watch and saw it was just after midnight. Swearing softly, I threw back the blanket and left the bunkroom. The guards stationed outside the door pointed me in Molev’s direction.

Silence enveloped me as I moved forward, my gaze searching the rooftops. I spotted his barely visible shape crouched low on the roofline. His grey tones blended with the night sky, making him almost indiscernible with his dark shirt and pants.

“Did you sleep until dusk as I asked?”

He pivoted and rose to his full height at the sound of my voice.

“I’m worried about you,” I said. “I don’t want you to go until you drop.”

He crossed the roof and jumped down.

I loved the way his steady gaze never left my face as he approached. It made me feel like I was the only thing that mattered in this world.

Sure, he’d said as much, but words and actions didn’t always match in life. It was a lesson I’d learned early. But with Molev? He was different. He didn’t manipulate, choosing to be straightforward instead. Even in the beginning, when he’d withheld information, he’d told me that was what he was doing.

He pulled me into his arms when he was close enough, and I readily returned his hug.

“I miss sleeping next to you,” I said.

“I miss it too. Roni and Steve think we have enough fuel with what we found here to make it to Iola, Kansas. They believe an armory there will be defensible and have more fuel.”
