She didn’t say anything else after that. Minutes ticked by. More infected collected outside the fence.

“Molev, we’re fine, but we need to start clearing the infected,” I said over the radio, watching one try to climb the fence.

“I understand,” he said back.

“Sid? Roland? Are you two able?” I asked.

“On it,” Sid said.

“I’ll take the back,” another voice said.

Their shots rang out, one after another.

“Careful,” Katie said. “I see Molev coming from the northwest.”

“I am to the east,” Molev said over the radio. “Welcome him, Katie. Tell him I am with you.”

The woman next to me made the sound I wanted to make. Another fey?

“Stay here,” I said, opening my door and using it to climb to the top of the cab. From there, I had a good view of Katie doing the same. She waved both arms at the fey, who was slowing. He wore the same style of leather pants that Molev favored and a tight-fitting T-shirt, but his hair was much shorter, barely brushing his ears.

“Hi!” Katie called. “We’re friends of Molev’s. He said to welcome you and to say he’s with us.”

The fey’s pace increased, and he vaulted over the fence to land lightly on the cab next to Katie. She stumbled back a step, and he wrapped an arm around her, catching her fall K-drama style.

“There are over two hundred people with us,” I said without yelling. “I don’t suppose you brought some friends, did you?”

His head turned toward me. Katie said something I couldn’t hear, winning back his attention, and he carefully righted her.

“Her name’s Katie, and she’s shy,” I said. “What’s your name?”

I could see him saying something to her but couldn’t hear it. When she nodded and stepped away from him, he turned toward me and started leap-frogging from one truck to the next until he stood next to me.

“My name is Ben.”

The very human name surprised me a little. All the names Molev had mentioned to me had sounded different. Unique.

“I’m Andie, Molev’s friend.”

“Where is he?” he asked the question but never looked away from me.

“I’m guessing Molev will be here any second. I think he was looking for you.”

Ben grunted. “I have been looking for him since he left.”

His gaze flicked to the vehicle behind mine. I turned to look and saw Steve smile and wave. The woman next to him did the same.

“Is she married?” Ben asked, once again fully focused on me.

“All of the women with us are single. A few have kids with them, which is why we’re trying to get to your community as soon as possible. We already ran into one hound that gave Molev a few dozen more scars before he killed it. That’s why I asked if you had friends with you.”

“It is only me.”

“Two fey are better than one,” I said.

His smile was huge.

“Is Ben short for something?” I asked, curious.
