And I understood why.

He saw the world’s uncertain outlook as a reason to grab everything by both hands and live fully. My hesitation had to be killing him, I thought.

“I hope it becomes a reality too. Just not today. You can’t afford to be any more distracted than you already are. I’m sure your people are missing you. I would be.”

He closed his eyes and rested his forehead against mine.

“I can see you will test my patience.”

“I know you have lots of it,” I said, patting his chest. “So I’m not too worried.”

He grunted and eased away from me to turn the French toast. As he worked, he began to answer my original question.

“I intend to ask how many volunteer names she's collected so far and share our plan to interview them, keeping my desire to return focused on a slow integration to adjust resource management.”

“Smart. She’ll understand where you’re coming from for sure.”

“Yes. And by inviting the doctor to accompany us to collect more samples, I will alleviate Waurlyn’s fear that I am abandoning the efforts to create a cure.”

“You’re doing more than alleviating her fears,” I said. “You’re creating a valid reason to maintain good relations between our two people.” I exhaled gustily as I realized what that meant. “We won’t need to live in fear of them trying to dissect you.”

He chuckled. “That was not a fear I was living with.”

“You should be,” Katie said, shuffling into the kitchen. “Humans can be messed up. Is that French toast?”

He smiled at her and handed her a fixed plate. “There is meat in the oven, but it is still cooking.”

“This is good,” she said, coming to sit beside me.

The rest of the team slowly trickled in from their rooms in the following minutes with Roland appearing last.

“What are the plans today, boss?” he asked Molev.

“Relax. Keep Roni entertained so she doesn’t start fighting with Steve again.”

“I appreciate that you recognize it’s not always my fault,” Steve said around a mouthful. “Even though I’m the one who’s always yelled at for it.”

“I don’t yell,” Molev said. “I simply remind you not to hurt her.”

“What about her hurting me?” Steve demanded.

“You don’t have a vagina,” Roni said with a smirk.

“That’s sexism,” Steve said, pushing away his plate dramatically only to snatch it up again when Roni tried to grab it.

“Welcome to the new world,” she said. “I like the change in the pecking order.”

Amused but trying to ignore it, I finished my breakfast and looked at Molev.

“Ready?” I asked him.

“Ready for what?” Roni asked. “Do we need to leave the house?”

I rolled my eyes at her. “No, we’re heading to Waurlyn’s like we discussed yesterday.”

“We’re not all going?” Steve asked.

“No. Mommy and Daddy want to talk without the kids along,” Sid said.
