The fey stepped aside and let us into the chaos that was his home. Packing containers sat all over the place in various states. Some open. Some with packing peanuts littering the floor around it. Some overturned.
“Everything okay in here?” I asked.
“Everything is fine,” the doctor said, appearing in an open doorway. She already had her lab coat on and was tapping away at a data pad. “How can I help you?”
“This is the immune woman,” I said, gaining all of the doctor’s attention. “But there’s a twist to this immunity thing. She’s pregnant. More women are immune, and a woman who was already pregnant with a human baby before sleeping with one of the fey gave birth to a baby that has similar mutations to what you saw in the trial subjects.”
The doctor stared at me for a moment.
“I need to examine the baby.”
“The mother, Angel, has agreed to allow you to do a house call and take a small blood sample.” I hesitated for a second. “What are the chances the baby will be all right?”
“When was the baby born?” the doctor asked.
“Yesterday,” Mya said. “Why are you concerned about the baby?”
“None of our trials were successful,” the doctor said. “However, rather than speculate, I’d like to do an examination first.”
She turned back to the door and called, “Kerr. Cassie. I know how you can help.”
A redhead and a fey appeared from downstairs a moment later.
“Cassie, I need blood samples from every woman having intercourse with a fey,” the doctor said. “I need an approximate duration and frequency noted with each sample.”
“When they started having sex and how often?” Cassie asked.
“Exactly.”
“I can do that,” Cassie said. “I think it’ll be easier to have everyone come here if you’re okay with it.”
The doctor nodded and looked at Kerr.
“I need a semen sample, please.” The doctor held out a plastic cup with a lid on it to Kerr.
Cassie looked at the cup, then Kerr, and started to grin. After taking the cup on Kerr’s behalf, she asked Eitri, “Can you have everyone spread the word that we need to see the women having sex with fey as soon as possible?”
He grunted and left, which was probably a good thing because the doctor produced two more cups and gave them to Drav and Molev.
“While they’re providing samples, Cassie can do the blood draws for both of you.”
I sat at the table and rolled up my sleeve for Cassie as Kerr, Molev, and Drav all shared looks and glanced at their cups.
“I know you’re not hesitating because you’re shy,” Mya said, watching them.
“They’re probably wondering if we’ll help fill the cup,” Cassie said.
Mya and Cassie shared smiles as the doctor looked up from her data pad.
“I would prefer uncontaminated samples,” she said.
“Don’t worry,” Mya said. “They’ll figure it out. They’re smart.”
Drav grunted and headed into the bathroom first while I estimated how long ago Molev and I first started having sex. Frequency was noted as sporadic.
Cassie wasn’t great at drawing blood, but she wasn’t the worst I’d had. Drav emerged with his topped-off cup just as Mya took my place. She yelped a little for her draw and paled, but she survived the process as well. Drav was helping her to her feet when Kerr left the bathroom with his cup. Molev gave me a long, measuring look before disappearing inside.
I inwardly smirked and watched the doctor add the samples to the tray. When it was Cassie’s turn, the doctor gave her pointers on how to draw blood.
