“Let the guards know we are returning to the second course after we eat.Request they restock the food while we are gone, and warn them that we will search for their devices each time we leave this house.”

Sid got up and went to deliver the message.Molev had a plate waiting for him when he came back in.

“They’re radioing for more food.I told them to add more meat this time.”

“Thank you,” Molev said.

Rather than making a plate for himself, since everyone was eating, he took a sausage patty and slathered it with peanut butter.

“I think I just threw up in my mouth,” Katie said under her breath.

I’d known from watching Molev eat the MREs that he avoided all tomato-based foods but really enjoyed meat. He’d eaten most of the bread products, though. But this made me realize how little I knew about his preferences. In the field, we ate to live. Here, we had the luxury of eating what we liked.Sort of.

“How does that taste?”Roland asked, already reaching for the peanut butter.

“Different,” Molev said.“Better than bread and jelly.”

Roland shrugged when he tried his own.“Not as disturbing as I would have thought, and it’s high in protein.”

Molev ate three more slathered disks then surprised us all by making sandwiches. He tucked each one into a baggy, stacking them five high before starting on a new stack.

I wanted to ask what they were for and saw I wasn’t the only one.But we all kept quiet, knowing Molev had a plan, whatever it was.As soon as everyone finished, I started the clean-up, and Katie helped since Molev was still sandwich-making.

After packing a large paper bag with twenty sandwiches and enough water bottles for everyone, he motioned for the door.

“Time to go,” he said.

“What are the chances all that food’s for a nice relaxing picnic?”Steve asked.

Molev made a noise that sounded like a laugh as he led the way outside. The guards followed us as we jogged to the second course but hung back as Molev set the bag down and faced us.

“You’ve all agreed to return with me and understand what it’s like out there. While your scientists work on a cure, we’ll train.Tamra died because of a simple mistake. When we leave, there will be no mistakes. No more lives lost.”His gaze swept over all of us.“Are you ready?”

“Hell yes,” Roni said.

Molev’s idea of training wasn’t pushups and obstacle courses. He had us fighting hand-to-hand but with a twist.

“You win when you bite the other person,” he said.

Katie made a panicked sound.

“Not hard,” he added.

Molev paired us up and watched, giving us pointers as we fought.Wrestling around to avoid being bitten was the most physically taxing thing on the planet.Mostly because Roland, Steve, and Roni were competitive as hell. The water and sandwiches made sense when Molev finally called for a break.

I collapsed on the ground beside Katie.

“I’d rather do sit-ups until I barf,” she panted.

“No, you wouldn’t,” I said, struggling to get enough air.

“We’ll see if you still say that tomorrow,” she said.

Molev handed us both a bottle of water and watched to make sure we started drinking before handing out the rest.

“It’s hard,” I agreed, “But what he’s teaching us might save our lives.”

We ate a sandwich each and rested for twenty minutes before he called us back. This time, he paired up with Sid to show us what he was seeing.
