“No,” Roni said.“We don’t play question and answer until we sweep the house again.”

Twenty minutes later, we tossed another bag out onto the lawn and shut the door.

I looked at Molev, and he nodded.

“What now?”Steve asked.“Are they just going to keep fucking with us, or are they going to get serious?”

“Don’t forget you’re dealing with two groups,” Sid said.“I’m betting the scientists have been working non-stop.They’re probably finding some neat things in Molev’s blood that are raising questions. This is the military’s way of trying to supply the answers without ruffling feathers.”

“Well, they did a shit job,” Steve said.“My feathers are ruffled. They should have just come out and asked.”

“They won’t believe what I tell them,” Molev said.“Their attention is focused on us.We only need to use the right bait to lure them out.Rest well tonight.Tomorrow will be challenging.”

CHAPTERSIXTEEN

Molev wouldn’t tellus what he had planned, and that annoyed me enough that I didn’t welcome cuddle time when I went to bed.It wasn’t that I didn’t trust Molev.I trusted him plenty.I didn’t fully trust the people in charge, though. Not with Molev. They’d made too many mistakes already.Which is why I wanted to know what Molev had planned so I could help him avoid things that would lead them to making more mistakes.

However, despite my distance when I’d gone to bed, I woke up in little-spoon position again anyway.

“I’m still annoyed with you,” I said as soon as I opened my eyes.

“I know.”

“So then, you’re purposely annoying me?”

“No,” he said, smoothing his hand over my stomach.“I’m trying to prove you do not need to lead alone. That we can lead together.”

“Not telling me what you have planned isn’t leading together.”

“No.But it will show that I am capable of understanding how human minds work. You trust me to protect you but little else.”

I turned in his arms and considered him for a moment as I thought back.I hadn’t shown any confidence in him.Patrick gave an order, and I followed it because I trusted him to lead. When I’d been giving Molev suggestions, he’d followed them, showing that he trusted me to lead. But had I ever shown Molev that I would follow him the same way?Not really.

“You’re right, and I’m sorry.I’ll embrace the suspense and see what the day brings.I do trust you.”

He rolled me onto his chest just like the previous morning.

“How much do you trust me?”

“Enough to know that we both understand this isn’t going to lead to anything.”I patted his chest and pushed myself up.“Get dressed.I think it’s our turn to make breakfast.”

Just before I moved away, I thought I saw him scowl, but when I glanced back as I tugged on my pants, his expression was as stoic as always.

“Don’t take too long.If I do all the cooking, you do all the cleaning,” I said as I left the room.

He joined me in the kitchen when I was still looking over the food options.

“We have enough eggs to make some pancakes, but I’m not sure they’ll be your favorite.”I checked the freezer and found two tubes of sausage.“Perfect.We’re going to need to request more supplies soon.”

We worked together to start breakfast, and as the smell of food filled the air, the others slowly trickled out of their rooms.

“Did you loosen his lips last night?”Roni asked as she sat at the table.

“No,” I said.“With all the ears we’ve found around us, maybe it’s better that he doesn’t share what he has planned.”

“Good point,” Steve said before looking at Molev.“Then I guess we’ll wait for your orders.”He held up his plate and grinned.“Four, please.”

Molev stacked four pancakes on his plate without batting an eye then looked at Sid.
