“Uh, I don’t have anything to do with that.I’m just here for a new batch of samples.”

“He’s telling you no,” Roni said.“But politely. We’re all about polite these days.”She side-eyed Steve.

“But you came here to help us,” she said to Molev.

“I am helping,” Molev said, crossing his arms.“I’m training anyone who is interested in how to fight the infected.”

She glanced at the soldiers assigned to guard us this morning…the ones who were also practicing with us.

“I believe this is an issue for the general,” one of them said.“Would you like to report it to him directly, or should I radio it in?”

She looked at her kit then at Molev.“I’ll go speak to him.”

“Thank you,” Molev said.

It didn’t take long for the general to show up.He didn’t look too happy when he got out of the vehicle and marched over to Molev.

“I’ve been told you’re no longer willing to cooperate,” he said.

“How am I not cooperating?”Molev asked.

“You were brought here to provide the samples we need to create the vaccine and are no longer willing to provide those samples. That is not cooperating.”

“I was brought here by these men and women, who were promised a ticket to sanctuary in return for their efforts. No one has contacted them for the names of their family like you promised.”

“The deal was a ticket for a way to stop this plague. There’s no cure yet, and there won’t be one without more samples. If you’re truly here to help us, you’ll give us what we need and stop involving yourself in what isn’t your concern.”

“Your inability to keep your word is my concern.I agreed to work with your scientists after a mutually beneficial exchange of promises. These men and women brought you a way to stop the infection from spreading as you asked.Do not hold them to blame for your scientists’ failures.Keep your word.”

The general narrowed his eyes.“I will not give you what you want.”

The way he said it poked at me, and I realized the general’s refusal to keep his word had nothing to do with getting our tickets.

I huffed out a breath and sat.

“He thinks you’re trying to get the location to where they’re sending all the essential personnel. It’s the backup plan for humanity. If everything goes to shit here and we all die, there are still pockets of humans the infected and hounds can’t reach.”

Molev crossed his arms and looked at the general’s reddening face.

“Patrick thought the same thing about revealing this location. He delayed an airlift because of it.Tamra, Cody, Tommy, Sean, Derek, Mateo.Humans, your humans, were lost because of fear and mistrust.Don’t make the same mistakes.”

Molev turned his back on the general.“Seven laps. The last one has to climb the tower twice.”

Everyone took off at a sprint except for me.

I moved to stand next to Molev.

“We’re out of here tomorrow morning,” I said, knowing we couldn’t give another inch.“Either we’re heading east on our own or west in an airlift you arrange so we can say goodbye to the people we’ve selected to go in our places. The choice is yours.”

“You might be willing to risk the lives of every man, woman, and child left on this continent, Miss Wells, but I’m not.”

“Don’t be blinded by your prejudice.Risking their lives is exactly what you’re doing. And before you say Molev is by withholding his blood, think.Molev knows you’re not just using it for a vaccine. He’s been dealing with our prejudice and fear for weeks.Yet, he’s still here. He’s still trying to show you through his actions that he truly is helping us.What are your actions showing him?

“Don’t make Patrick’s mistakes.”

The general left without a word, and after everyone finished their laps and climb, we returned to the house early.

Since the first day of training, we’d checked the house for devices each time we returned. We’d never found anything. That wasn’t the case this time. They were everywhere, and we didn’t stop until Molev called it.
