“Sid, take these to our guards,” Molev said.

He started making spaghetti for dinner while we waited for Sid to return.

“Andie has given the general two options,” he said.“Either he keeps his word in the morning, or we leave to join my people. The choice to join me is still yours.”

“We’re with you,” Roni said.

The rest nodded.Katie a little hesitantly.

“Eat.Rest.We leave at first light.”

Dinner was quiet.Normally, we’d all be so exhausted that we shuffled to our beds and dropped in fully dressed.Tonight, Roni found a pad of paper and started writing. We all hung back, wanting to do the same—write a letter to the people we were leaving behind. While I waited, I helped Molev clean up, something he’d been doing on his own for the past week.

“Who bit you today?”he asked.

“I didn’t catch his name.”

“He bit too hard.If you see him in the morning, tell me.”

I stopped drying and laughed.“I will not.Steve’s been letting me win because he’s afraid to make you mad.”

“I have not,” Steve said.“You’re getting better, and Molev is calling breaks before your arms give out.”

“Notice how he didn’t say he’s not afraid of making you mad,” Roni said, passing off the pad of paper.“I’ll be right back.”

She went out the front door, and Roland watched out the window.

When she returned, she was smiling.“They’re willing to get our letters to where they need to go.”

Katie found more pens, and they shared the paper.I claimed my piece as soon as I was done cleaning.

Rachel,

Things didn’t go like I’d hoped, and it looks like the ticket might not happen. But they’re working on a cure. While they do that, I’m going back out to see if there’s another way to stop what’s happening.

You, Zion, Nova, and Apollo are in my thoughts always.

Andie

I foldedit and wrote her name and camp number on the outside.Steve took mine out with everyone else’s.Exhausted, despite the shortened training, I headed for our room and hit the shower.I focused on how much I would miss that convenience instead of what Rachel would feel when she got my letter.

By the time I finished, Molev was sitting on our bed, waiting for his turn.

“Better hurry before we run out of hot water,” I said.“I’m pretty sure everyone’s going to take one tonight, just in case we can’t have one tomorrow.”

I went to the dresser and grabbed some clean clothes, courtesy of whoever had stocked our fridge that first time.Keeping the towel in place, I pulled them on.When I turned, Molev was still there, watching me.

“What’s going through your head?”I asked.

He held out his hand to me, and I went to him.His lips twitched as he looked down at my fingers.

“I’ve been waiting for this,” he said.“The moment you would come to me without any hesitation.”

“Pretty sure it’s happened a few times already.”

He shook his head and tugged me to stand between his legs.

“You think before you act.You question ‘why’ in your head. Not this time. This time you just…came.”
