He released my hand and wrapped his arms around me, pulling me forward until my knees hit the bed.He rested his forehead against my chest. It wasn’t a pass but a moment of surrender. He needed something from me that I suspected no one had ever given him before.Comfort.

I reached forward and gently ran my fingers over his hair.

“Talk to me.What’s wrong?”

“I wanted the vaccine. For you.For every female left.”

“Careful,” I teased.“Steve would be upset to hear you talk like that.”

Molev harrumphed but continued to hold me.

“I’m sorry the general didn’t keep his word,” I said.“I know you don’t like returning empty-handed.”

He looked up at me.

“My hands are not empty, and my brothers will understand.Knowing that more humans still survive will give them hope. Many will want to come here to see for themselves.”

“I’m not sure that will go over well.”

Molev shrugged slightly.

“Hope carries us forward and blinds us to the reality that we are hated for no other reason than our existence.”

“Not by everyone,” I said, tracing a finger over a scar on his jaw.“Some people really like you.A lot.”

His pupils expanded, and I smiled.

“Hurry up and shower.I might still be awake when you settle in to spoon me tonight.”

He grunted but still didn’t release me.

“What do you want, Molev?”

“You.Just you.”

I framed his face with my hands, memorizing each scar-marked feature.Giving into an impulse, I leaned in and kissed his cheek. His arms tightened around my waist, but he released me willingly enough when I pulled back.

“You’re a handsome man, Molev. But I’m not sure what I want beyond saving my nephew.”

His gaze held mine as he stood. He didn’t hide any of the hunger he had for me.

“I understand,” he said.

I watched him close himself in the bathroom and wondered how long his understanding would last.

CHAPTERSEVENTEEN

I passedout before Molev returned and definitely didn’t expect to wake on my own the next morning with him still spooning me.Over the past week, he typically woke me with a gentle shoulder shake and a softly rumbled, “It’s time.”But never while he was still in bed with me.Due to the extreme training he was putting us through, he woke first and made breakfast, allowing the rest of us to sleep until the last minute.

So I lay there for a second, without opening my eyes and acknowledging I was awake.Despite telling him I wasn’t ready for a relationship, there were aspects of having one that I missed.Such as waking up with a partner on a lazy Saturday morning.Staying in bed and talking about nothing for hours.Moments of snuggling.Tender looks. But those things tended to only happen at the beginning of a relationship and faded over time.Which was probably why most of my relationships never lasted very long.I knew what I wanted, and as soon as I was the only one compromising, I was out.

In some ways, I felt bad that I wasn’t willing to give Molev a real chance. He seemed willing to compromise, but what point was there in trying when I didn’t even know what the next day would bring?Or the current one, for that matter. How could I commit to anything with everything so uncertain?

His fingers moved slightly against my stomach.

“No early morning wake-up today?”I asked quietly.

His hand moved over my stomach.A caress and a comfort.
