“Where did he go?”the general asked yet again.

“How am I supposed to know?I’m not the one following him with a drone.”

“Miss Wells, I don’t believe you understand the gravity of the situation you find yourself in.”

“The handcuffs, armed guards, and fat lip are a pretty good indication,” I said.“But do you understand the gravity of your situation? You’ve fucked up as hard and as thoroughly as humanly possible. He was our chance to end this.”

“He still is.But your current circumstance wasn’t what I was referring to.You were so concerned about sending your nephew to join your brother and niece that you never considered that your brother and niece could just as easily return to join your nephew. We have plenty of people eager to take their places.”

I let out a slow, tired breath.

“Do what you need to do.It doesn’t matter.Bring them here.Leave them there. Our days are limited either way. That many people can’t live on an island forever, and we both know it.”I closed my eyes and stretched my neck.“All we can do now is hope our end is quick.”

“Sergeant Bromwell claimed you were an asset to the squad. You were good at reading people.Do you think I’m bluffing, Miss Wells?”

I opened my eyes and looked at him.

“That’s not the right question.”

“Then what is?”

“Will it even matter that humans ever existed on this planet once we’re gone?”

He stood abruptly and walked out of the room.It wasn’t the first time he’d left, and I doubted it would be the last.

I looked at the soldiers he’d left to guard me.They kept their eyes straight ahead as if I wasn’t there.

“If Molev comes back, don’t try to shoot him. He’s a little rough on weapons and low on patience with people who try to hurt him.”

They didn’t acknowledge me.

“He’s got moves that you can’t even see.But he showed us a few.Told us we’re too reliant on our guns when killing the infected.Taught us how to survive hand-to-hand with the infected so we don’t get bitten.I think losing half our team really got to him.He doesn’t want any more humans to die.”

“Then why did he run?”one of the soldiers asked.

“Because he’s not willing to be a puppet to save us.I think we have enough of those, don’t you?”

His gaze flicked to me.

“Shut up,” another guard said.“Both of you.”

“If a slap didn’t get me talking, do you honestly think a scolding will quiet me?”I asked.

We all heard a thump outside the door, but they didn’t move.

I frowned and shook my head.

“Seriously? There’s a weird thump in the hallway and nothing.”

“Our orders are to guard you.”

When there was another sound—a rasp—I twisted in my chair to look at the door. The knob rattled.Only one thing tried opening a door like that.

I slowly got to my feet.

“Sit down,” one of the soldiers said, clapping a hand on my shoulder.

A soft groan came from the door. Then the snap of breaking metal. The knob fell to the floor. Finally, the soldiers with me reacted.
