Weapons drawn, they faced the door. After several moments of nothing happening, they got into position to check.

As soon as the soldier stepped into the hallway, he was gone. The remaining two looked at each other.I was pulled to my feet and shoved forward.I didn’t fight them.I knew it wasn’t an infected waiting out there but Molev.I’d guessed it when the knob had broken, but the pile of bodies with their heads still attached proved it.

The second I passed over the threshold, he materialized before me.

His gaze swept over my face, and his eyes narrowed when he saw my lip. Then he was around me, and the door shut between us.A gun went off.Several grunts followed. Then silence.

“Please tell me you didn’t kill them,” I said.“I need to know where the key is to these handcuffs.”

The door opened.“I did not kill them.”

“Good. We don’t have a lot of time.Check their pockets. We need to find the key and get out of here.”

“We have time,” Molev said.

“We do?”

I glanced at the pile of unconscious people again and saw the general there.

“That’s not going to go over well.”

Molev grunted as he searched for the key. When he found it, I held out my hands.

“Where are the others?”I asked.

“Safe,” he said as he unlocked me.

Once I was free, he captured my chin and tipped my head to get a better look at my lip.

“What happened?”he asked.

“Fear happened, and it’s not going to stop happening until the infected and hounds are no longer a threat. We tried it their way.Maybe now we try it ours.”

Molev’s gaze searched mine for a long moment.

“Mya, the human that touched the crystal was bitten. She died but didn’t become stupid when she woke up.She is the same as before.”

I was stunned.

“She doesn’t understand why she is immune, but she believes it was the crystal.”

I immediately saw the problem.

“So if we destroy it,” I said, “we would potentially also be destroying a cure. But we still have her.If she’s immune, she could hold the key to a cure as well.”

He shook his head.“I’ve seen how your leaders would treat her.Until I can trust them to care for her, I will not tell them.”

“Then what do we do?”

“We keep trying here.”

I glanced at the bodies.“I’m pretty sure they won’t be in a listening mood when they come to.”

“Then we help them listen.”

“And how are we going to do that?Keep knocking them out each time they act like assholes?”

Molev shifted his hold on my chin to cup the back of my head.
