“We’re running low on food,” I said.“At least the stuff that he prefers to eat.His diet is more protein based. Can you have more sent over?”

“I will ensure it happens immediately,” Waurlyn said.“Is there anything else you need?”

“Let the soldiers know they are welcome to train with us,” Molev said, surprising me.“Not just the soldiers who were ordered to do so.”

“Done,” Waurlyn said.“If there’s anything else, let me know.”

“When are you leaving for the evac site?”I asked.

“In three hours.Would you like me to arrange transportation for any of you?”

“Yes,” Sid said.“I want to go.I won’t believe it’s done unless I see it with my own eyes.”

I wanted to go, too.Like Sid, I needed to see Zion get on that plane. But I didn’t want to risk Molev either by taking him with me or by leaving him behind.

I glanced at Molev.

“Where you go, I go,” he said as if reading my mind.

When I faced Waurlyn and found her watching me closely, I briefly wondered if that feeling of being scrutinized and judged was how I made people feel when I watched them.

“Yes, please arrange for transportation for all of us.”

She nodded and stood as the doctor started packing up.As soon as they were gone, I dug into the breakfast Molev had prepared and groaned with the rest when Molev started making jelly sandwiches.

“Wouldn’t it be better to take the morning off?”I asked.

“No,” Molev said.“I don’t know how long we have here, and we need to use every moment to prepare. No more needless death.”

No one else groaned or tried to argue. We worked together and cleaned up.

“Well, this is interesting,” Brandon said, walking out the door first.

The rest of us trailed out behind him and saw the vacant curb in front of our house.

“No guards.”I looked at Molev.“It’s a sign of trust.”

Molev grunted in his noncommittal way.

“We’ll see if our house is bugged again when we get back,” Sid said.

We ran to the course, which Molev considered our warm-up, then immediately paired off. However, he changed up the game.Instead of trying to bite each other, we practiced how to get out of holds, and Sid showed us how to incapacitate without permanent damage. We all understood this wasn’t for the infected but in case we were tricked again.

My gaze slid to Molev. He stood to the side, his observant gaze missing nothing as Katie struggled to turn Brandon away.I could see Molev’s need to protect in the way he uncrossed his arms when Katie lost her footing and the way he nodded slightly when Brandon caught her.

Then Molev darted in and spun Brandon around while he was distracted.

“When you’re helping your team, don’t forget to watch your own back. You can’t help anyone when you’re dead,” he said, straightening Brandon.

I realized how much Molev was like Patrick in the way he pushed us to be better. Both did it so we would survive.

When a few other soldiers showed up, we reverted to our biting. But Molev was more involved this round, sneaking around to grab someone’s arm to distract them or pluck someone off their feet and redirect the other person to gang up in someone else’s group. The core group rolled with it.The others faltered. Our training had leveled up in ways that started to show the soldiers there what it would be like beyond the barrier.

The rumble of several engines interrupted us.

“Never stop fighting,” Molev barked.“Distractions cost lives.”

Everyone jumped back into motion as the vehicles came to a stop at the edge of the course.
