“And that’s how it’s done,” Steve said.

“How what is done?”Molev asked, glancing at him.

“How a guy avoids having to sleep on the couch. It would have been a bitch to find one out here for you.Good job.”

Roni snorted as she scanned our surroundings.I did the same, noting the craggy faces of the mountain on each side of the road.A tower crowned a steep incline to the north with stairs built alongside the rock. The barrier blocking the road ended at the rock face, but I saw a chainlink fence on the hill.

“Stay close,” Molev warned.

“We need to get to that radio and let Gypsum know how many you killed,” Patrick said.“They need to get something in the air to look for any you missed.”

“Where is the radio?”Molev asked.

My attention returned to the intact barrier crossing the road ahead of us.The steel-enforced gate was firmly bolted from the inside.I scanned the hill where the fence changed to chainlink near the tower.Everything looked like it was intact there as well.

“It’s up there,” Patrick said, indicating the tower.

The men moved out around us.Some circled the vehicles to stand guard. Some took higher perches on top of them as lookouts. The rest came with us up the hill.

“Stay here,” Molev said when we reached the tower’s base.“I will check first.”

Patrick didn’t argue, and Molev disappeared from sight.A moment later, two headless bodies were tossed out from above us.

“I think that’s the all clear,” Roni said.

A few soldiers went ahead of us while the rest stayed below.

We found Molev near the radio, looking at its dark panel.

“They have a battery backup and only turn it on during their assigned time,” Patrick said.

He flicked a switch, and we all listened to the static for a moment before Patrick started talking.

“Loveland’s tower is recovered.Fifty were intercepted, off road, on their way south near thirty-four north of Estes Park.Need eyes in the air to ensure that’s all of them.Over.”

“Copy that,” someone replied.“Airborne in ten.Over.”

Patrick looked at the soldiers with us.“Ears on the radio; eyes on the horizon.”

The men nodded, and Patrick’s gaze swept up.“No time like the present.”

As soon as we reappeared, the men around the vehicles started moving.A few climbed on top to either guard guns or provide fire for the ones without.

I knew Molev would be jogging alongside now and didn’t like the idea of being stuck where I couldn’t see what was happening.

“We stick together,” I said to Molev as we approached the vehicles.

“You will be safer inside the vehicle.”

“But will you if I’m in there?I stay with you.You deal with the infected, and I’ll make sure there aren’t any accidents.”

“I will be safe, Andie.”

I stopped walking. He did the same and looked down at me.

“You wanted me to care. This is me caring. If you try to put me in a box, this isn’t going to work between us.”

He frowned slightly.
