“I already warned you that I didn’t do well with roles being forced on me.”

“I’m trying to protect you, not force you into a role.”

“Aren’t you?Sticking me inside is putting me in the weak, damsel-in-distress role.I might not be as strong as you are, Molev, but I’m not weak. And I’ve never been the damsel in distress who needed saving.I ride up top where I can keep an eye on you.”

His fingers twitched at his sides, and I had a feeling those digits would already be buried in my hair if they weren’t coated in infected blood and I wasn’t wearing my helmet.

“No retreating,” I said, holding his gaze.“This is who I am, an at-your-side kind of girl.”

He looked at Sid and Roland, who’d already climbed up top.“Help her up.”

“Bullshit,” Roni grumbled under her breath as she went inside with Katie.

“No unnecessary risks,” Patrick reminded Molev before joining them.

I climbed up top and glanced at the rest of the personnel riding above. They weren’t focused on Molev but on the two men who were opening the gates. The metal groaned as they pulled them inward. Two ladders fell inside, clattering on the pavement.

“Guess we know how they got in,” Sid said.

“Not good that the infected know how to use those,” Roland added.

Unable to disagree, I glanced at Molev to see what he thought. His troubled expression as he considered the ladders wasn’t a comfort.

The lead vehicle started forward, and Molev jogged beside us as we rolled out.Despite how easy it had been for the infected to overcome it, the barrier still held a sense of security I didn’t like leaving. So I focused on the scenery as I scanned for signs of infected.

The flat face of the mountain bordering the road grew taller and crowded closer with each mile. And it wasn’t quiet outside for a change. The sounds of our engines weren’t quite enough to drown out the sounds of the river running beside the road.It was hard not to take in the breathtaking views and the peace of the mountains.

At least, until right after we crossed under the enormous pipe and the landscape opened up.We spotted our first infected near a store just down the road.It heard the engines and came running toward us.Molev killed it quickly, but everyone was more on edge after that.

When the land started closing around the road again, and we spotted a pile-up of cars ahead, I knew we were in for trouble.

Molev ran ahead, pounded twice on the lead vehicle’s side, then sprinted toward the wreck.Infected called out as soon as he reached it, spilling from the cars and the backs of trucks.

The gunner with us swore when Molev disappeared under a wave of mauled bodies.

“Wait,” I called.“Molev can handle this.”

The vehicles slowed, and above the noise of the engines, I heard it–the roar that sent a shiver of fear through me every damn time.

The gunner swore under his breath.

A moment later, the first head flew out from the pile. Then another and another.I glimpsed Molev as the bodies were knocked outward. He moved like a blur, removing heads faster than I could count until the last infected fell. Then, without stopping, he ran back to the lead vehicle and jumped onto the top with the men there.

The convoy picked up enough speed to barrel through the cars, knocking them out of the way.

We picked up even more speed as we continued downhill. That didn’t stop Molev from jumping down and running beside the convoy again, though. We passed a few buildings and old barns along the way, but no infected emerged. The stillness of everything was unnerving.

My gaze kept returning to the road ahead, waiting for the first signs that we were close to the outskirts of Loveland.Rather than spotting the city, I saw an RV pulled across the road.Molev once more pounded on the lead vehicle.

We slowed as he sprinted ahead.

No infected poured from the vehicle this time. They came running from the trees across a bridge to our right.Molev went to the nose of the RV and started pushing. It rolled back toward the bridge, running over infected or knocking them into the river below. After he cleared the vehicle from the road, he leapt over it and started beheading again.I watched him as we passed unmolested. His shirt was bloody from before but now had tears in it and, based on some glistening spots, new bites too.

“If you can move fast enough to kill them, then avoid their damn teeth,” I said.

His bark of laughter rang out over the sound of the engines as he continued to end each undead attempting to get to the convoy. When he finished, he ran up alongside me.Blood spattered his face but didn’t take away from his sexiness as our gazes locked.

“It’s hard to avoid all of their bites when they pile up on me.”
