He called for a few men to go with him. They ran across the parking lot.An infected tumbled out of the first truck they opened. One of them shot it while the other tried to start the engine. It didn’t even turn over. The second one did.

They pulled the trailer around, and I watched the soldiers shoot out one side of its tires as another man released the trailer from the truck. The trailer tilted precariously.

Molev appeared out of nowhere and rammed a shoulder into the trailer, straining as he heaved upward. The groan of metal was echoed by an infected. The trailer started to tip, and then Molev was gone.It buckled a little as it crashed, but that didn’t matter.Patrick was already yelling for another one as a pair of soldiers climbed onto the first one to provide cover fire.

Time seemed to slow no matter how fast everyone moved. The number of infected emerging outside the fence grew.Another trailer was backed against the tipped one.Someone else got another truck moving.

I scanned the parking lot, taking everything in.

“Steve,” I called, “I need you as my eyes.Roland, get on the second trailer.”

My feet had barely touched the ground when Molev appeared in front of me.His rage-filled gaze locked with mine.

“No sexy looks when you let one of them bite your cheek.I like that cheek.Keep it safe.”

I tried stepping around him, and he caught my arm.

“Molev, they need you more than I do right now.Get those trailers tipped over.I’m going to clear some cars.Go.”

I got more than a growl this time.

He snarled at me.An actual lip-curling, life-threatening snarl. Then he was gone.

“Pretty sure he’s not happy with you,” Steve said as he climbed inside the Stryker with me.

“Pretty sure you’re right,” I said, ignoring the way my heart was racing.Instead, I focused on what I needed to do.

Everyone got out of my way at the sound of my engine.I pushed the first three cars out of the way then turned around, running over a group of infected in the process. One pass at a time, I made room for the additional trailers and kept the infected relatively clear.

A shot pinged off the Stryker when I drove through someone’s line of fire.

“We’re fine,” I yelled loudly.

“You think he heard that?”Steve asked, pointing to some more infected I could run over.I swung around to get them as I answered.

“Do I want to take that risk?If he heard the ping, then he heard me.Don’t forget that he knocked Evan out for shooting when I was in the line of fire.”

“Good point.”

I pushed the last car outward, using it to run over a few more infected. However, one of them didn’t go down.It jumped onto the car I was pushing and looked at me through our windshield. The moment burned itself into my mind, but before I could call out for Molev, the once-young man jumped off the car and ran away.

Turning hard, I ditched the car and returned to the trailer border.

“That was fucked up,” Steve said.

It was more than fucked up.It was terrifying.

I parked, cut the engine, and was out the door a minute later.Steve watched me scramble to the roof and shield my eyes to stare in the direction the infected had run.In the distance, I saw a lone figure standing there. Two more joined it.

“Molev, I’m looking at three. One of them wasn’t acting as undead as we’re used to.His eyes weren’t as white.I could almost see a hint of his pupil in them. And I swear he looked me right in the eyes like he was…I don’t know.Memorizing what I looked like, maybe. And he moved differently, too.Faster.More in control of himself.Almost normal.”

“I’m not liking what you’re saying,” Steve said.

“Neither am I.”

As I stared, I saw Molev dart into the street behind them.He had the heads off the two before the one who’d looked at me even turned. He lost his head too.Instead of throwing it, Molev looked at it.

“That’s a little morbid,” Steve muttered.
