“He’s probably checking its eyes.Better him than us…unless you’re volunteering.”

“Hell no.”

Molev tossed the head aside and started running back. With the last trailer in place, closing the gap in the fence, the remaining undead outside the fence were being picked off by the men on the roof.Molev ignored the stragglers and came to me.

“You’re right. It was different.I want you to stay out here while I help clear the infected inside.”

I glanced at the building.“I’m guessing the shots would have let whatever’s in there know we’re here.”

“Yes.But they like to hide and wait for you to find them.”

“That’s not a game of hide-and-seek I’m interested in playing,” I said.“Go have fun.”

“Will you help Sid keep watch from the roof?”

“Don’t think for a second that I don’t understand what you’re doing.Yes, you can put me safely out of reach on the roof. This time.”

He grunted and looked down at himself.

“A little contact goo won’t hurt me,” I said.

He didn’t look happy when he picked me up and was quick to jump to the roof. The second he landed, I was on my feet.

“Stay here.”

He leapt off the edge but returned with Katie, followed by a grumpy Roni and two other women I hadn’t noticed. One stumbled away from him as soon as he released her, and the other thanked him.

Then he was gone.

“The roof is huge,” one of the snipers said.“We can use the lookouts.Yell if you see anything.”

We spread out on the roof and watched the infected gather around the perimeter fence as the sun slowly moved across the sky.

“We’re secure,” someone yelled.

I stayed where I was until someone else came to take over for me.When I made my way back to the ladders, Molev wasn’t the one waiting for me when I descended.Patrick was.

“Where is he?”I asked.

“I was hoping you could tell me.He disappeared.”

“What do you mean he disappeared?”I asked.

“Just what I said.According to Private Daniels, they were sweeping the building for undead, and Molev vanished.”

“Were there any signs of infected where he was last seen?”

“No.Nothing that would explain his disappearance.”

Hearing that helped settle the ball of worry that had started to form. We’d witnessed Molev take care of scores of infected alone.Unless there was a hound hiding in the building, which I doubted since only Molev was unaccounted for, Molev left on his own.Something he’d done countless times before.

“Then, we’ll have to wait until he gets back for an explanation,” I said.

“If he comes back,” Patrick muttered.

“Patrick, when he does, I’ll be sure to point out that you still don’t trust him despite the injuries he sustained today during his herculean effort to keep us all safe. And when you include this in your report to Waurlyn, be sure to also mention this was the first time ever that we went into a city without losing a single person.”

“What makes you so sure he’ll come back?”Patrick asked.
