“Yep.We have a few Mark 19s…if we can hit one,” he said.

“If?”I asked.“We’ve done it before.”

“I think that was half luck. The hounds don’t exactly hold still. But the blast zone is bigger, so...”He shrugged slightly.“But the sound is going to carry. Are you sure we want that?”

“Molev was ripped up the last time we faced one.Part of that was our fault for not understanding what he was doing.Part of it was due to what he was fighting. We need to be his support. If we can slow them down and make them easier for him to kill, then he’ll be able to handle whatever else we draw in.Hopefully.”

My gaze slid to the ground below.

“If I’m wrong, Molev will let us know.”

Sid nodded.“Take my spot.I’ll find someone to assist. It’s in the Stryker down by the trucks.”

“Take a knife with you for Molev,” I said.“He needed it last time.”

Sid jogged off, leaving Steve and me to take over.

“We need to spread the word so there aren’t mistakes like last time,” I said.“One of us has to stay put.”

Steve made a face.“Fine, but you get to explain why I’m not glued to your side.”

“Baby,” I said, already turning to jog away.Out of the two of us, he was the better shot, and I was better at making sure people understood what they needed to do.

I went to the next soldier and explained what Molev would likely do once the hounds showed up.Then the next.Katie showed up on the fifth explanation and listened to what I was saying.

“I’ll start on the other side,” she said.

Another howl punctuated her words. Then a second and a third from different directions.West, south, and east. They were surrounding us.

Katie’s eyes went wide.

“Stay focused, Katie.Molev knows what he’s doing. We need to make sure everyone here knows what to do, too.”

She nodded and took off across the roof.

I managed to talk to half a dozen more before the first set of eyes was spotted. The call crackled over the radios.Another chorus of howls followed. The chilling wails rang in the night sky, bouncing off the sides of the building.

I borrowed the nearest radio.“Did Molev get his knife?”

“He has it,” Sid responded.

A roar came from the south, followed by snarls.

“The roar is Molev,” I said over the radio.“Donotshoot where he’s fighting.Does anyone have eyes on the other two?”

“I have eyes to the northwest,” a voice came over the radio.

An engine started below, indicating that Sid was moving into position. The intensity of snarls from the other side increased, and Molev roared again.Threads of fear wove their way through me as the image of his injuries from the last time resurfaced.

I sprinted across the shadowy roof and arrived at the edge just as Molev dragged the hound into the circle of light.Smoke spiraled up from the creature’s heaving black sides. Its head thrashed side to side until it caught sight of us on the roof.It tensed and snarled low, no longer fighting the direction Molev was dragging it.

Molev noticed its sudden interest and glanced up at us.I took in the new scratches on Molev’s torso and his shredded shirt as his gaze swept over me and the nearby soldiers, who already had their weapons trained on them.

“Molev has this one,” I said.“Watch the dark for the other two.Last time, one came at him from behind.”

Barrels shifted as most of them focused on the shadows just beyond the pool of light where Molev and the hound struggled.

Blood glistened wetly as Molev heaved the hound up and slammed it into the ground. He pinned it with his weight and pulled the knife from the strap on his thigh.
