The rapid bap-bap-bap of the fired grenades echoed from the other side, punctuating the plunge of Molev’s knife into the hound’s ribs. The savagery wasn’t any easier to witness than it had been the last time as he carved and bashed his way to the beast’s heart. It struggled even harder underneath him, raking its claws over his shoulder.

I flinched at the new wound.

He punched his fist into the hound’s chest and pulled his hand free a moment later.I felt that sickening pull-push at my center as I stared at the blank lump of the creature’s heart.

The rapid succession of explosions from the grenades barely registered.I watched the hound underneath Molev continue to thrash and howl as Molev squeezed his fist around the heart. The muscles in his forearm strained until the heart burst into black dust in his hand.

The beast stilled underneath Molev.

He slowly got to his feet and looked up at me.

“We have a medic with us,” Patrick said from beside me.“We need to address those wounds before you go out again.”

“I will be fine,” Molev said before disappearing into the darkness.

Patrick looked at me.“He won’t do any of us any good if he passes out from blood loss.Get him up here.”

“Patrick’s not wrong, Molev,” I said loudly enough for my voice to carry.“Meet me by the tent, or I’m leaving this roof to drag you up here myself.”

Molev was already shirtless and sitting by the tent when I arrived. His scowl said it all.

Ignoring it, I grabbed a jug of water and handed it to him as the medic cleaned the larger wound.

“Drink while you frown at me,” I said.

“You will not leave this roof,” he said before taking several large swallows.

“We have too many hours until dawn for you to be losing this much blood already. If you don’t want me to leave this roof, then take care of yourself.Humans have sports where they fight, and in those sports, they have breaks between rounds to hydrate and take care of injuries. This is no different. After each round, you come up here and have the medic treat you.Deal?”

The medic cut the thread for the last stitch he placed and stepped back.

“I have some liquid skin to stop the bleeding on the smaller ones,” the man said.“It will only take a minute.”

He started digging through his kit as Patrick walked over, carrying a vest.

“This is the biggest one we have.I’d like you to wear it.It should minimize injuries to vital organs without restricting your movement.”

Molev accepted it but didn’t put it on until after the medic was done covering the rest of his injuries.

“We’re seeing movement to the north,” Sid said over the radio.“I think the explosions are bringing in more infected.”

Molev fit the vest over his chest. He gave an experimental flex, which made a few seams pop, but the vest held together.

“Here’s a radio,” Patrick said, handing him a device.“Put it in the front pocket. If you need something from us, use it.”

Molev gave Patrick a considering look before nodding and focusing on me.

“Stay on the roof, Andie,” I said in a Molev-like tone, which made him frown at me.“I already know what you want from me, Molev.Just be careful.”

He grunted but continued to hold my gaze.

“We’ll give you a moment,” Patrick said, motioning for the medic to follow him.

“What did you see when I fought the hound?”Molev asked when we were alone, surprising me.

“Feral intelligence,” I said.“It fought going into the light until it saw us.Then it hesitated.”

“The hounds have always feared the light. If they stop fearing it, humans will not survive.”
