The rumble of the engine didn’t drown out the sounds of Molev’s struggles.I listened to the grenades fire and explode twice before Molev finally appeared with the hound. This one was bigger and had stubby black horns sticking from its head. They glistened in the light, as did Molev’s arm and neck.

It fought Molev every inch of the way.Smoke billowed from its hide as Molev struggled to pin it to the ground, and blood dripped freely from his straining neck.He pulled his knife. The hound thrashed, and the knife slipped from Molev’s hands.

The hound howled, a chilling sound that made the back of my neck prickle.

“The west hound is on the move,” Sid said.“He’s heading south.”

“Slow him down,” the soldier next to me said into his radio.“Molev needs more time.”

Molev didn’t try for the knife.Instead, he started punching the hound’s exposed rib cage. Its claws raked his arms, face, and neck as it fought to free itself.

Bap-bap-bap rang out again.

The creature under Molev howled.Another echoed from nearby before a series of rapid explosions cut it short.

“He needs a knife,” I yelled at the same time Sid said, “we got it,” over the radio.

Three knives dropped to the pavement near Molev. One was close enough for him to grab.Black gunk flew as he hacked his way to the creature’s heart and tore it free. The misshapen stone was almost larger than his hand.He snarled as he squeezed it with one hand and listed to the side when it turned to dust and the hound underneath him stilled.

He looked up at me as he opened his hand and let the black powder fall free.

Without looking away, he reached up to his radio.“Stay on the roof.”

He tucked a spare knife into the back of his pants and strode into the darkness.

I wanted to be angry, but I understood. If the other hound was knocked out, it was better to try to kill it now than wait until it came to.

He reappeared a minute later, carrying a petrified heart in his hand.I could feel that same wrongness as before, pushing at me.Telling me to run.

A howl rang out from nearby.

“It’s moving again,” Sid said over the radio.“Heading north.”

Molev paused and looked up at me.

“I see it,” Patrick said over the radio.“It’s reached the undead and the hound there.”

The confirmation that there had been four nodding at Molev to hurry up.He’d said “packs,” but four was more than we’d ever seen at once.Or maybe others had but hadn’t survived the encounter. If Molev hadn’t killed that first one so quickly…I shuddered at what might have happened and at what could still happen.

“They’re advancing,” Patrick said.“Sid, get ready. You’ll need to thin their numbers—”

Molev started to squeeze the heart.

“—or we’ll risk being overrun.Molev’s in no condition to—”

The heart burst into black dust and poured from Molev’s fingers.

“Wait,” Patrick said as a howl rang out.“It stopped advancing.”

The low keen went on and on until it cut off with a whine.

“Get up here,” I said to Molev.

He leapt up and swayed a little on his landing. The vest had saved him from having his guts ripped out from the looks of it.But it hadn’t prevented the gash along his neck or the puncture wound in his bicep.

“You look like hell,” I said softly.

He frowned at me.
