“Let’s get you patched up while we can.”I held out my hand, but he shook his head and walked off without me.I had to jog to catch up.

The medic was already waiting for him.He cut the vest free then handed Molev the jug of water.Molev dumped it over his head, rinsing away the caking blood.Once he was done, he sat.

I stood nearby and watched the medic reglue a few injuries, add stitches to Molev’s neck, and disinfect the puncture.

“What’s this from?”he asked.“Bullet?”

“A horn,” Molev said.

“They have horns?”the medic asked.

“Some of the males do,” Molev answered.

“Well, at least we don’t have to fish a bullet out,” the medic said.“That’s good news.”

He lightly clapped Molev on the shoulder and said he was done as Patrick joined us.

“Rest.Eat.Do whatever you need to do.The last hound left with the undead,” he said.

“They left?”I asked.

Patrick rubbed a hand over the top of his head.

“Yeah. As soon as the second hound dropped, the first one howled then ran.The undead followed it.”

I glanced at Molev to see what he thought of it.He was looking off to the north.

“Don’t even think about it,” I said.

His gaze met mine.

“We need to know,” he said.He stepped close and pressed his forehead to mine without touching me anywhere else.“There are many hours until dawn.If it finds another…”

“No unnecessary risks, remember?”

“This is necessary, Andie.I am sorry.”

He left before I could grip his arms.I dropped my hands to my sides and turned away from the empty space to face Patrick.

“You don’t seem too upset about him taking off this time,” I said.

“He’s right. The last time he let an undead go, it came back with more.”

“You said there are over one hundred infected and a hound.Molev is held together with more glue and stitches than skin right now.How do you think this is going to end? He’s our hope for a cure, Patrick. Why can’t you see that?”

Patrick exhaled heavily.“I am seeing that, Andie.I’m also seeing how much he cares about you.I don’t think he’ll do anything that would stop him from returning. He’s smart. He’s proven that time and again.Trust him.”

I crossed my arms and studied Patrick.

“What changed?”I asked.“This wasn’t your opinion a few hours ago.”

“Because I finally understand why he’s doing all of this,” he said.“It’s you, Andie. He’s doing it for you.”

“He’s doing it for more than just me.He’s doing it for all of us.Humans and his people.”

“But he’s willing to do it for the rest of us because of you, Andie.I can see that in the way he looks at you and talks to you.But there’s a lot I still don’t understand. If Molev’s people know how to kill the hounds, why did they live with them in the caverns? Why not kill them all while they were trapped with them?Or since they were freed?

“Molev’s people have been living much closer to ground zero than here. Why are we still seeing so many hounds? Why haven’t they killed them all?”
