“Based on my conversations with him, I think Molev and his people have only recently discovered how to kill the hounds. That’s why the first two fey were running from them.”

“If they truly wanted to keep us all safe, wouldn’t they try hunting them now?”

“Molev said that’s what the first two are doing now.”

Patrick's expression turned thoughtful.“Only two?Makes me wonder how many fey there really are.”

“Does it matter?”I asked.

“You know it does, Andie.Even if they aren’t a threat to us now, will they become one once the hounds are dead?”

“The only threat to humanity will be the people who continue to think in terms of ‘us’ versus ‘them.’We need to fully embrace working together to find a future, Patrick, or it will never happen.”

“There’s a handful of undead by the fence to the south,” Brandon said over the radio.

“Prevent a buildup as quietly as possible,” another voice ordered.

The sound of a silenced shot barely carried across the roof.

“When’s the airlift due?”I asked.

“If the watchtower and this fence hold, the first one will fly out of Gypsum at first light.”

After seeing the number of infected that had been waiting here, I wondered what else was out there.Maybe Molev was right to go after the infected and prevent them from tracing our steps…if they were smart enough to do that. The trail of bodies we’d left on the road wouldn’t be that hard to follow.

“How many FOBs have gone quiet since we returned with Molev?”I asked.

“That’s not information I have.”

“After what we saw tonight, I think it’s something you need to find out,” I said.“We need a better understanding of what’s changing, or Molev’s going to want to leave more often to keep tabs for himself.”

Patrick studied me for a moment.

“You don’t like that he was hurt.”

“No, I don’t.And you should feel the same concern. How many injuries can he sustain until he fails? That’s a question I never want to learn the answer to.If he fails, we fail.”

Patrick nodded once.

“Agreed.I’ll speak to Waurlyn.”He shook his head.“This first-name basis shit is enough to prove the world is changing.”

I almost laughed.“What would you have called her before all of this?”

“Madam Secretary,” he said.“And there wouldn’t have ever been a reason for us to speak directly.”

“The world’s changing,” I said as another volley whispered across the roof.

“It is,” Patrick agreed.“Let’s hope we live long enough to see the outcome.”

“I’d settle for living long enough to see dawn.”

The quiet firepower kept the number of infected from becoming too much over the next several hours as we waited for Molev’s return.I stayed near the tent and saw Steve and Brandon when they came in for their turn to sleep.

The medic and I heard a distant howl once, but after that, the night continued to pass quietly.

A few hours before dawn, Molev returned, dripping from another swim in the lake.

He had more cuts and bites and looked like he was ready to collapse as he sat for the medic.
