“Okay.Are you still hungry?”

Weeks of dealing with death and fear had conditioned me.I could watch an infected die and eat a sandwich within five minutes if necessary. However, what had happened to that woman was on a whole other level, and I wasn’t sure if I’d be able to eat.But I knew we both needed to.

He took my hand and led me from the room.Roni was waiting outside the door.

“It’s been a rough forty-eight hours,” I said.

She snorted.“It’s been a rough couple of months. We get it.Is everything okay?”

“As okay as it can be,” I said.“Is there anything to eat?

In the kitchen, I let Molev tell them whatever he was comfortable sharing. He stuck to describing his exposing gown and the tests as we ate the burgers they’d kept warm for us.The others laughed, and I could see how their humor helped ease some of Molev’s strain.

“Sorry I missed it,” Roni said.“Bet there was a good breeze in that hospital gown. Now, did they make you run commando, or did you get dressed first?I mean, there had to be some serious swing factor if you were commando.Any thigh bruises?”

“Jesus,” Steve said.“Ican’twith you anymore.I’m going outside.”

“For a run?”Roni asked with a snigger.

He left without answering.Roni winked at me and hurried to follow him.Katie shook her head and retreated to her room.

“Glad you’re okay, Molev,” she called over her shoulder.

Roland, Brandon, and Sid went to have a beer on the back patio.I watched them and felt a tightening in my chest.Did we have any chance at all of surviving?

“Don’t,” Molev said when I looked down and tried to push away what I felt.

“Don’t what?”I asked.

“Retreat from them. They care about you, Andie.Allow yourself to care about them in return.”

“Why?Caring about them like they’re my family is dangerous. If I care too much, there’s a good chance I’ll break when something happens to one of them.”

“Retreating isn’t living, Andie. It’s waiting to die.”He reached over and threaded his fingers into my hair, pulling my head back so he could lean over me.

“And I’m not done with you yet, Andie.”
