When she finally stilled, he pressed his forehead to hers.

“Forgive me.”His broken whisper tore through me, and I didn’t know what I could do to help the raw hurt I saw on his face as he sat there with her.

“They don’t come back,” the doctor said softly.“When each one of the trials fails, the volunteers stay dead.”

Molev carefully laid the woman on the bed and left the room. The doctor unlocked the doors so he could leave.

When he emerged with hands fisted and radiating rage, his gaze locked with the doctor.

“No more female volunteers,” he said.

“This was the first and only,” she said quickly.“We thought we might have better results with a woman since all the previous tests were done on men and failed.”

He looked at Waurlyn.“I will be present for each trial, or I will leave.”

She nodded.“I understand.”

“Will you allow me to clean up that bite?”the doctor asked hesitantly.

He took a steady breath, his gaze finding mine.I could see how badly he wanted to leave.

“Change doesn’t happen in seconds,” Waurlyn said.“It takes steps.Learning from mistakes. We’ve made a mistake today, Molev, and we’ve learned from it.Please believe we’re trying.”

I could see some of the anger fade from his eyes as he nodded.

It took some time for him to clean up and for the doctor to check over all his previous injuries after she stitched his new bite.Once she cleared him, he turned to me, and I was up in his arms a second later.

“I can walk.”

“That will take longer.”

He was out of the exam room’s door and jogging down the hall a second later. His impatience with the elevator startled a few people when he ran out, but everyone just moved out of his way, and no one made a big deal about it.

Outside, he ran faster. We reached the house before I finished counting the stitches in his neck.

“Hey, strangers,” Steve said, opening the door at our approach. He stepped back to let us in, grinning at me in Molev’s arms.“How’d everything go?”

Molev didn’t stop to answer him.He strode to our room and kicked the door shut behind us.

The second I was on my feet, he started removing my gear.He moved so quickly I didn’t understand what he was doing until I stood in my bra and underwear in front of him.He turned me twice then fell to his knees in front of me, wrapping his arms around my waist and pressing his forehead to my sternum.

His shaking finally penetrated my shock.I smoothed my hand over his still-damp hair and held him close.

“I’m okay,” I said softly.“I promise.”

“You’ve touched so much infected blood.”

Someone knocked on the door.

“Um, everything okay in there?”Roni called.“You have a bunch of worried people out here.”

Molev exhaled heavily and rubbed his face against my stomach. It made my heart do some crazy beats until he let go and got to his feet.

“I apologize,” he said, handing me my shirt.

I shook my head and slipped on the covering.“There’s nothing to be sorry for. What happened upset you.It upset me too.Do you want to talk about it?”

He shook his head slightly.“Not yet.”
