“Then we end this.”

He made it sound so definitively easy, but I knew better. It would be anything but easy even if we managed to get the answers.Like he’d said, the greys could want anything, even our deaths.

Arms still chained behind him, Molev sat against a support beam in the barn.A light was pointed right at him, which should have blinded him to just about everything else in the room.It didn’t.His watering gaze immediately locked on me the moment I stepped inside the space.

Patrick closed the door behind us, his footfalls heavy on the cement as we approached.

Cody and Brandon stood between us and Molev, and I could see movement on the other side of the light. They had their guns ready but not pointed at him.At least, not until he shifted a little.Weapons flew into ready position.

We’d traveled in the MRAP for hours with only Roland standing watch.Maybe the extra eyes were why he wouldn’t talk. And probably the light that was making his eyes water.

I veered around Cody and Brandon and adjusted the light, so it aimed at the floor several feet in front of Molev.Sitting in the pool of light, I looked at Patrick.

“Can we get some water and something to eat for both of us?And I think we only need one guard. The light wasn’t visible from outside, and our voices shouldn’t carry,” I said as if they were here to protect Molev, not protect us from him.

Patrick nodded and motioned for everyone except Brandon to follow him out.

I waited until they were gone to look at Molev.

“You haven’t slept since you were shot. You drank water, but I’m guessing you didn’t eat anything.Does that mean you don’t need sleep or food or that you’re more like human men than we realize and are being stubborn for the sake of being stubborn?”

The corner of his mouth twitched.

“Stubborn then,” I said.

I glanced at Brandon, who was watching us from the other side of the light.

“Can you go get something for him to sleep on?Maybe some blankets and a pillow from the house?”

“I don’t think I should leave you alone.”

“I think I can manage on my own for a few minutes.Please.”

Brandon glanced at the door then at me, swore under his breath, and left.

When I faced Molev, he was watching me intently.I stared right back. The door closed behind Brandon.Molev didn’t move an inch.

“That’s what I thought,” I said.

“What do you think?”he asked, the low rumble of his voice washing over me.

“You’re not interested in trying to leave. Why?”

That corner of his mouth twitched again.

“Maybe I like it here.”

“I doubt that.Your eyes are still watering from the light.”

“Thank you for moving it.”

“You’re welcome. Why don’t you tell me what questions they already asked you and which ones you won’t answer so we don’t waste any more of your time?”

“You think they are wasting my time?”he asked.

“Aren’t they?”I returned.

He tipped his head and studied me for a moment.
