I found myself staring at the wrong end of at least four firearms.Patrick stood just behind Sid, Sean, William, and Ted.

“How was the ride?”Patrick asked amiably.

“If you wish to keep your weapons intact, lower them,” Molev said, his voice resonating with warning.

“Your threat is exactly why the weapons are here. The man you hit might not ever wake up again.”

The corner of Molev’s mouth turned down ever so slightly. Was he upset that he’d hurt Evan or disappointed Evan was still alive?

“Would you like to stretch your legs for a bit?”Patrick asked.

The four men moved back a few steps, leaving enough room around the door for someone to step out.Molev rose smoothly and fast, his crouching bulk blocking my view of the door as he exited. The gauze on his back only had a little bit of bleed-through on it.Less than I would have anticipated since the bullet hole hadn’t been closed.

He stepped down and rose to his full, impressive height before glancing around him.

“Please, follow me,” Patrick said, using his asshole-commander voice before walking away.

Molev hesitated for a moment then shadowed Patrick.

I waited until they were out of sight before exiting and shaking out my legs.Kevin came to stand beside me, and we watched Patrick and six others enter a barn with Molev.

“Tell me it feels like we have a sleeping cat by its tail,” Kevin said.

“It does,” I said.“I hope Patrick can find out what he wants.I’m ready to go home.”

“Amen to that,” Kevin said.

Patrick left the barn and jogged toward Roni, who was closest to him. They spoke for a minute. Then he pivoted and returned to the barn.

“Hunker down,” Roni called.

We pitched in and unpacked what we’d need to stay the night at the secluded homestead. It had solar, which meant working showers, hot food, and heat.Real beds were a bonus. But none of that meant safety.

Mateo, Brandon, and Steve cleared the house, removing an undead from inside. Those of us who’d been up since the attack got first dibs on the shower.Once I was clean and fed, I claimed one of the three beds and crashed hard, fully dressed.

A hand on my shoulder brought me out of what felt like a light doze. With a gasp, I shoved out before I even opened my eyes.

“Easy, Andie,” Patrick said.“You’re safe.”

Heart pounding, I waited for the adrenaline spike to catch up to me and glanced at the window to orient myself. The sun had set, so I’d managed a few hours.

“Who am I taking over for?”I asked.

“Me,” Patrick said.“The grey hasn’t said a word other than, ‘I need to piss’ since he’s been in the barn.Roland said that he was chatty with you.Mentioned he wanted resources.I’d like you to try to talk to him again.”

“Okay.”I stood and rolled my shoulders.

“Can I have five to use the bathroom first?”

Patrick nodded.“Meet me by the door.”

He was pacing near the kitchen when I joined him.

“What else do you want to know other than the resources?”I asked.

“How many of them are there?Where did they come from?We know they emerged from the crater in Irving, but how did they get there? What do they want, and will they stop killing us when they get it?Assuming what they want isn’t our annihilation,” he added.

“And if I get all those answers, then what?”
