“No,” Molev said.“If he loses his grip, he will hurt you.Go on the other side or help Roni.”

“The hell!”Roni said, red face.“Is my effort that pathetic to you?”

Amused by her indignation, I took the other side of Kevin.Instead of standing opposite Molev, though, I planted myself next to him.As I leaned in and placed my hands on theirs, the light scent of soap smell filled my nose.It was much more pleasant than Roni’s body odor and reminded me that I should sneak another shower before Patrick decided we needed to move again.

I’d only barely begun to push on their hands when Katie’s voice crackled over Kevin’s radio.

“Small group of undead to the south. They’re standing at the edge of the trees just watching.”

We all immediately let go.Roni and Kevin were faster in rushing toward the door.I got tangled in Molev’s feet and would have tripped if not for the massive arm that banded around my waist.Annoyed, since I wasn’t at all the clumsy type, I looked up at him.

“My apologies.Stay here.”He picked me up and plopped me down on the seat he’d vacated.A second later, he was by the door, turning Roni around.“Stay with Andie.”

She frowned at me, and before either of us could register what was happening, he pulled Kevin through the door and shut it tight.

“Did the women folk just get put in their places?”she asked me.

“For his sake, I hope not.Butifthat’s what this was, please keep in mind that we probably have completely different social structures. He didn’t want to arm wrestle you, but when you insisted, he gave a little. You need to give a little in return.”

“I was ready to give plenty until he pulled this caveman bullshit,” she said with a scowl as I joined her.

I didn’t pretend to mistake her meaning.

“He’s been unchained for less than twelve hours, and we barely know anything about him.Maybe thoughts of having sex should wait a few weeks, don’t you think?”

She shrugged.“I haven’t been laid in so long Tom’s starting to look good to me.”

“I’m going to tell Patrick to put Tom in child protective custody to save you from yourself.”

She flashed a grin at me.

“That boy wouldn’t know what hit him. It’d be the best five minutes of his life and the most disappointing of mine.”

We both smiled slightly then sobered.

“I’m going to check,” she said.

I backed up a few steps, my hand resting on my sidearm. If the infected were at the edge of the field, they wouldn’t have reached the barn yet.

She opened the door and frowned at the sight of Kevin’s back.

“What in the hell are you doing?”Roni demanded.

He glanced back at us, grinning.“Mostly listening to Roni talk about—”

She hit him with enough force that he grunted. She could have hit him a lot harder, though.

“Where’s the grey?”she asked.

“Molev,” I said.“We’re trying to build trust, not alienate him more.”

“Fine.Where’s Molev?”

Kevin glanced at the roof of the house and reached for his radio.

“Update?”he asked.

“He just removed the last head.I think he was bitten, though.”
