“Fuck,” Roni breathed, conveying all the emotion in that one word that I felt.

“He’s jogging back,” the radio said.“Get ready.”

We knew the drill.Any bitten person turned undead within about fifteen minutes. And once they turned, they would go after whoever was closest. The only good news was that most newly turned people were uncoordinated and slow.Would that be enough for us to kill Molev before he killed us, though? What if his version of slow was our version of normal?

Internally cringing, I ran around the side of the barn with the others and got into position.More of the team came running from the house.Obviously, we were all having the same thoughts.Stopping an infected grey wasn’t going to be easy.

Molev’s jog slowed when Roland, Sid, and Kevin brought up their guns.

“Were you bitten?”I yelled.

Molev stopped advancing altogether.

“Do you have a watch that works, Andie?”he called back, surprising me.

“Yeah.”

“Start the timer, and you will know if I have been bitten or not.”

I looked down at my watch and noted the hands.

“I can see a mark on his shoulder, Andie,” Sid said.“There’s no point in a timer. We should kill him now.”

Patrick joined our group and brought up his own weapon with a scope on it.

“Turn around slowly so we can see your back,” Patrick yelled.

Molev turned as instructed, and Sid swore.

“There are two bites on his front and at least six on his back,” Patrick said.“We can’t take the risk.”

“Wait.Why would he—”

Two rapid shots rang out, signaling the start of a barrage I couldn’t count. My ears rang, and I watched Molev burst into action, running and veering quickly until he disappeared into the distant trees.

Patrick swore long and hard before yelling that we were moving out immediately.

While everyone scrambled, I glanced down at my watch then at the tree line, my thoughts whirling. If he’d been bitten so many times, why would he tell me to start a timer? Why had he turned around instead of just running? He probably didn’t know we could see him from that distance, but still…he’d been coming toward us.We would have seen the bites when he’d gotten closer.

“Andie!”Roni yelled, breaking through my thoughts.

Just before I turned, I saw movement in the trees.I couldn’t see what it was, but I had a feeling Molev hadn’t left and was watching us.

I took a seat in one of the Humvees this time and started up the engine.Katie got in next to me.

“Well, this has been an interesting morning,” she said.“Heard you got to arm wrestle the grey before everyone tried to kill him.Was it fun?”

“Honestly, it kind of was.”For a minute, I’d actually forgotten my death was just around the corner and had remembered what it was like to live.

“Good. We need more fun and less running for our lives.Do you think he’s going to catch up to us and murder us all in our sleep?”

“I don’t know.”

We left the farm behind.

The first roadblock slowed us down a little as we headed south. It was three cars deep, and more than Patrick wanted Sean to try to punch through with the Stryker.

“We’re going around,” he said over the radio a second before they veered right into the ditch.Thankfully it wasn’t a deep one, and there was enough room between the end car and the trees.
