I could see the infected calling out as it passed them and took a steadying breath as the infected started to pour from the cars.

“They’re going to swarm us,” Katie said.

“They are,” I agreed, keeping right on the fueler’s tail.

It smoothly left the road like it was made to do, and I watched the infected topple under its large tires.I hoped it would keep most of the infected off of us, but that wasn’t how it worked.

They just kept coming.From everywhere.

Running over a person in the larger vehicles wasn’t a big deal.In the Humvee, though?I had to fight the wheel a little more.Goo spattered the windshield, but I couldn’t let go to clean it.

It wasn’t any better on the other side of the ditch. Our slower speed had enabled them to gather in a larger herd. Some managed to crawl on top of the Humvee’s hood instead of falling under the tires.I could barely see the tanker through the bodies and the blood. An infected on the hood grabbed the wiper when I finally used it and bent it back. Then it smeared its hand over the windshield in front of me, completely obliterating my view.

“Tell Brandon I’m driving blind,” I said, dropping my speed by two miles.

Katie got on the radio and warned everyone.

“There’s another roadblock ahead,” Patrick said.“Keep your speeds steady at twenty-five miles per hour.Sean’s going to break through this one.”

“Katie, I need to see,” I said calmly.

The Stryker would push cars to the side but never perfectly straight.I was using my side mirror to keep myself fairly centered on the road.

In that small view, I saw a flash of grey.I opened my mouth to tell Katie so she could warn the others, but before I could, Derek came on the radio.

“The grey found us.”

In the two beats of silence, as we waited for Patrick’s command, Molev appeared beside my window.

“I will remove them.Hold steady,” he called.

“Wait, what does he mean?”Katie asked at the same time he flipped himself up onto the hood.He used the momentum and his leg to knock two of the infected off, then his hand swiped over the glass, clearing a strip for me to see.

In the next second, he was gone.

I hit the gas, closing the gap I’d created between me and the fueler.Ahead, we heard the Stryker hit the roadblock.More infected closed in around us as we navigated through the opening.Only this time, I could see and sped up with the rest of the convoy.

A few minutes later, the infected who’d tried to chase us fell out of sight.

“We have a few clingers again,” Mateo said.

“We keep going,” Patrick answered.

The infected fell off bit by bit, and the trail eventually ended. But Patrick didn’t call a stop for another few hours.During that time, he got better at picking roads that weren’t filled with traps.

“No one exits their vehicles.I’m not losing anyone else to stupid mistakes.I want someone out of the top of that last MRAP to cover Katie and Andie. They will exit one at a time and do a sweep.”

“Got it,” Brandon said.

A second later, the top of the MRAP opened, and Mateo popped out.

“Ready,” Brandon said.

“I hate this part,” Katie said, reaching for the handle.

The latch released, and the door opened an inch. She extended her leg, leaning forward to get out with her weapon ready.

“Wait!”Brandon said.
