He leaned his head against the post and closed his eyes again.

“Why does gaining trust take many actions when losing it takes one?I have been shot at by every male out there for no other reason than the fact that I exist. How many chances should I give these humans, Andie? Why am I the one to earn their trust, but they feel no need to earn mine?”

He sounded so damn tired.Just like I’d felt when I’d watched my brother make the hardest choice of his life.It shouldn’t be the way it was, but there was no rule that said life had to play out fair.It just played.

“You’re right.Trust works both ways.I can’t control how others act, but I can control how I behave. What can I do to earn your trust?”

“You’ve never shot at me, Andie. You already have a portion of it.”

“I want all of it.”

He looked at me again.

“Why?”

“So you’ll help me stop what’s happening. If everything you said is true, stopping what’s happening is what you want too, and I think we’ll need to work together to make that happen.”

He grunted but didn’t close his eyes or look away.I took that as a promising sign.

“Why don’t you come inside with me and get cleaned up again?I’ll see if I can find you a shirt you actually get to wear this time after we look at those bites, and maybe you can find a spot to get a little sleep. You look like you need it.”

He stood smoothly, but I wasn’t as quick to rise.He wasn’t the only one needing some well-earned sleep.Unfortunately, I didn’t imagine I’d get it.Not in a defenseless house in the middle of nowhere.

We left the barn, and I saw Steve and Sean working together to drag the bodies out of the yard.Sid and Katie were now on the roof instead of the vehicles. And Cody was lugging a ladder toward the side of the barn.

I only felt a little guilty when I went inside. We all had our different roles to play, and it looked like I was the current best fit for being a liaison.

Ted and Roland were in the kitchen, making a hot meal out of whatever they had found in the cupboards, while Patrick sat at the kitchen island with a stack of maps spread out in front of him.All three looked at us when we entered.

“The wiper on my vehicle was bent. Can one of you take a look at it?Molev and I showering then sleeping,” I said.

“Together?”Ted asked with a stunned look.

Roland glanced at Molev.“If he’s ever bitten, you won’t need to remove his head. It’s already up his ass.”

Ignoring them, I continued through the room, looking for the bathroom.

I heard the water running before I reached it.

“Sounds like someone’s beat you to the shower. If you want to stay here to save your place in line, I’ll go look for a shirt.”

He tipped his head at me, which I took for a nod, and carefully leaned back against the wall to avoid pressure on one of his bites that was either still bleeding or had reopened when he’d been cleaning up bodies.

“It won’t take whoever is in there long,” I promised, already moving away.

It only took me two minutes to find a hoodie that would fit him. However, as I jogged down the stairs, it occurred to me that I’d never seen him wear anything warmer than a short-sleeved shirt. Was that because he didn’t need to or because he couldn’t find anything to fit him?

When I found him again, he was staring down at Roni, who chose that moment to open the towel she wore.

“See?All woman.”

Molev’s gaze swept down her torso and lingered between her legs.

“If you change your mind and want a fuck that will rock your world, come find me.”

“Not the kind of relationship building we’re looking for, Roni,” I said, trying to gauge Molev’s reaction.

She closed the towel and winked at me as she walked down the hall.
